Weezer Release A J-Pop Cover

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Jun 04, 2008 7:52 am

[floatr]ImageImage[/floatr]Weezer, led by Rivers Cuomo who has a place already on these forums here and here, have a new album out this week called "Weezer". Since its their third album with that name, fans are also calling it "The Red Album". Of interest to us is one of the bonus tracks they are planning to include for the Japanese edition. According to this news article (Japanese), the band has covered BoA's J-Pop hit Meri Kuri. It's commmon for overseas bands to add bonus tracks to their releases in Japan. Some, like New Order, the Flaming Lips, Avril Lavigne and Ian Brown, have even included Japanese versions of their own songs but it is rare for a band to release a Japanese cover of a J-Pop hit. Apparently, Cuomo's Japanese wife introduced him to the song and he immediately decided to cover it. He is reported to have said that it was tough to sing but overall it was a good experience. BoA says she is delighted by the news and hopes to sing it with him some day. Here's a video of her original version:

It's a Japanese version of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1". You can find it on the Japanese release of that album or as an audio track on the special edition DVD.

wow. that was shitty.
and whats up with the album cover? maybe they are trying to be 'ironical' by dressing up in lame ass hipster fashion, but it really just looks like they are indeed that lame.

Weezer will now join the likes of other great American bands whose last hurrah was Japan. Mr. Big comes to mind.

The Japan Times mentions American Scott Murphy in a recent article and explains that he has gained a measure of fame inJapan with a series of J-Pop covers. If I'd been paying attention last summer, I would have read the same paper's more detailed profile on the guy or even Japan Probe's post which picked up the story. Nevertheless, having come across the guy, I looked around on YouTube and his fans have uploaded a number of his songs, albeit mainly audio-only clips taken from his albums.

Here he is on "Hey! Hey! Hey! Music Champ":

And here are a couple of covers from his third covers collection:

(Morning Musume's "Love Machine")

Comic band Beatallica have carved out a nice little career performing Beatles songs in the style of Metallica with titles like "Blackened In USSR", "And Justice For All My Loving" and "I Want To Choke Your Band". Another in their set is "All You Need is Blood" and it seems they also have a Japanese language version. "Chi, chi, chi..."
