There's now a Nippon Maid Association. They plan to issue a newsletter, set up seminars and officially certify maids.

Bettina Korek and her For Your Art crew did it again -- another fantastic art opening slammed with people. Actually, they have been sizzlin' hot all weekend with the first LA Art Weekend...which has highlighted some of the city's newest gallery spaces including last night's opening of Royal/T, the nation's first Japanese "Maid Cafe"...

Cross-dressing maids add spice to Tokyo cafes
Tue Apr 15, 2008 12:32am EDT
By Chika Osaka

TOKYO (Reuters Life!) - "Welcome home, Master," a group of French maids sings out, bowing deeply to a customer entering their maid cafe.

This could be any of the dozens of maid cafes dotting Tokyo's Akihabara electronics district, where geeks engage in role-play with girls dressed as French maids. But don't be fooled by the frilly pinafores: all of the maids here are men.

In this novelty-hungry market catering to Japan's free-spending computer and comic book fans, cafe owners are coming up with ever more exotic formulas to satisfy booming demand.

"I do this for a change since I have an ordinary job," Miyuu Kurusu, one of the cross-dressing maids working at the cafe, told Reuters. "I love talking to people, enjoy wearing cute costumes and get a kick out of it when people tell me I'm pretty."

It all started when the manager of "Hibari Tei" cafe, named after a bird, asked a few cross-dressing men to fill in for women working at a different maid cafe. To his surprise, no customer found out they were being served by a male waiter.

"The maids are too pretty to be men," said 33 year-old businessman Takao Mochizuki, who also cross-dresses while on vacation.

Maid cafes generally do not offer sexual services. Customers order typical cafe fare such as coffee, tea and sandwiches, served by giggling, girlish maids. In addition, they can ask the maids for special, non-sexual services, such as drawing pictures on an omelette using tomato ketchup.

"These maids know how to look good -- more so than real women!" Yoko Iwata, a 33-year-old customer, enthused.

Maid cafes first emerged in Akihabara some six years ago. They have grown into a booming business and are a core part of the Japanese "otaku" or "nerd" industry believed to be worth nearly $2 billion.

Like Kurusu, most waitresses at the cafe have day-time jobs so the cafe opens only on weekends, depending on the maids' availability.

The cafe caters not just to Japanese geeks but also to fellow cross-dressers, tourists and even couples.

"I think there are many Japanese cross-dressers and they actually look good," said 24-year-old maid Chazuke. "They're just not out in the public yet because most Japanese used to be hesitant to cross-dressers."

I can totally see her go off on a customer "you got a problem with our service?"

You won't be able to get a maid foot massage from Mefle in Akihabara after August. The owners claim that traffic in the area has dropped off sharply which, presumably, is a result of the recent stabbing incident, and plan to close.

There's now a book out which celebrates ten years of the maid cafe. Most articles date the trend back to the 1998 Pia Carrot video game which featured characters in maid costumes. There was a cafe based on the game at an anime convention the same year which proved a hit.

Here's a "maid" calld "Yukiji" who works at Hibaritei. I wasn't sure whether to post the picture here or in the Random Gaijin thread but it is most certainly appropriate for a board called Fucked Gaijin. I think he's Swedish:

Play Wii Fit with a Japanese Maid for $25

Image

Why Akihabara's Refresh Club doesn't have a New York outlet, I don't know, but on the wake of this groundbreaking news, they better open it soon. For $25 you will be able to play Wii Fit with Japanese girls in French maid dresses. Yes, Wii Fit, that game with the balance board that often requires you to lean forward and backward. Because, you know, as the owner says, exercise is all about your playmates:

Playing Wii Fit by yourself is lonely. But here, playing along with a maid makes exercising enjoyable.

He is right. And yes, I love French maid dresses. Not to wear them, though. Too bad Brian has left Japan already, because this called for a hands-on.

Tokyo's best maid cafes
Maid cafés may seem like a fad from 2006 but they are here to stay. We present you with a guide to all the different maid experiences.
Maid cafés have become so embedded in Japanese media and fetish culture that it is hard to imagine a Tokyo without them. There are now about 217 maid cafes in Japan, but the good news is that increased competition is making them much, much crazier. (For those needing background, there's more on the history of maid cafes here)

Here is a guide to the best maid cafes in Akihabara -- to help you pick just the right place for your maid-ly needs.

Most overrated: Pinafore, which appeared in the Fuji TV primetime drama "Densha Otoko" in 2005 and put Akihabara maid cafés on the popular radar. They don't actually offer the services seen on TV, and the place smells like cat urine. (Yamanaka Building 1F, Kanda Sakumacho 1-19, Chiyoda-ku, tel. 03 5295 0123, pinafore.livedoor.biz)

All aboard the Maid Train
Image
If you plan to travel on the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway Co. or Kashima Rinkai Tetsudo Co. train lines this weekend, I hope your reservations have been made... or maybe that should be "maid". Yes indeed, cosplay is finally going off, er, on the rails!

The special service offered by the two Ibaraki prefecture train lines is an effort to boost ridership on the local lines. If previous maid-related phenomena such as the Maid Taxi are any indication, the promotion should be a huge success... as long as the maids are being featured.

"Amakusa Chuchu" is one of six young ladies hired to put on cosplay regalia complete with white aprons and blue miniskirts. Squeals Miss Chuchu (choo-choo, heh), "Masters and younger ladies who are not regular customers in Akihabara, I'm looking forward to seeing you."

I'm guessing the opposite is more accurate as an untold number of Japan's basement-dwelling Otaku "masters" get some badly needed fresh air and sunshine en route to the stations where the special Maid Trains will be stopping. Maid Train service will be running Sunday, March 21 through Monday, March 22. All aboooooooard!!
