Ministry of science & Education losses Isotopic materials.

Postby TFG » Sat Sep 27, 2008 9:22 pm

It is all happening at the Ministry of Science & Education.
First they misplace 200.000.000 Yen and then they lose an Isotopic material sent through a delivery service to Kyoto.

Perhaps the money will glow in the dark.

Japan is going nuts over the U.S. nuclear-powered carrier docked at Yokosuka, citing unknowns about its safety, but then they go and send radioactive materials via post and lose it, and not to mention the ridiculous shenanigans that go on at the nuclear power plants here.

Duuuur.

WTF are you talking about?

"Isotopic materials" is a term so vague it is meaningless. Every single substance in the universe is composed partly of isotopes. I presume you mean some concentrated radioactive substance was lost in shipping. Even that could be harmless, some types of radioactive emissions are so weak they would be blocked by a single sheet of paper, others are deadly.

Google Image Search is your friend.

Actually, I have an original copy of the Infocom HHGTG game somewhere, IIRC it has that image on it, along with the extras like the Joo Janta 200 Super-Chromatic Peril Sensitive Sunglasses, a bit of lint, and a friendly "Don't Panic" button.

Hey, I don't write the news.
I know isotopic is vauge but that is what they said! HOSHASEI BUSHITSU!
I just glimpsed this news but, it seems they were sending this material to Kyoto Uni. They said, if exposed to it one would instantly receive a radiation dose well over a years worth of normal radiation.

It is probably on its way to Mikasa foods right now!

Love the green guy.

Again, this is so vague as to be meaningless. Exposed how? Presumably it was shipped in a safe container, you would have to open the container to be exposed. Radiation exposure is a function of time and distance, more time and closer distance means greater exposure. But even that doesn't translate to a higher dosage, it could emit something like an alpha particle that doesn't even penetrate your skin.

This is a typical scare tactic, it implies you just look at it for a millisecond and you are fried to a crisp by deadly radiation. But the fact is, one airline flight from the US to Japan gives you a larger radiation dose than a whole year worth of normal exposure. I guess all those transoceanic airline pilots should be dead by now.

But you can't collect and concentrate airline flight radiation for later use whereas radioactive materials distributed via post then "lost" can later be used for nefarious purposes. For example, polonium-210 is available in small quantities in commercial products, but if you collect enough you can play KGB and silence your political critics in interesting ways.
