Roppongi was world famous as a party spot and they are destroying it.
Do they think that the same amount of money is gonna come in?

It has already shrunk quite a bit since you were last here AO and it is changing rapidly compared to just a couple of years ago. Shinjuku remains the same even with Blinky's unsuccessful and probably rightful attempts to evict GG and her fellow despots.

I agree. Roppongi is not the same as it once was 5-10 years ago. They have HAD to clean the place up to attact the businesses with RH and now Midtown. You can literally see the difference and a lot of shady businesses have had to move elsewhere as a result. This can be both good and bad depending on your "expectations".

So although the slogan back in the day could have been, "Roppongi. Where goats can even get laid", it's more fitting to say, "Shiiiiet, and you thought you wouldn't have to spend more than Y2,000 for a lunch! Welcome to Roppongi!"

2,000? That's pretty reasonable for a goat!

I first heard of Roppongi as a kid reading Marvel comics. Roppongi was one of Wolverine's hangouts in Japan. As an avid Wolverine fan, I considered it a duty to visit Roppongi at least once.

It did NOT disappoint.

Roppongi is only going to get cleaner. There's a development scheduled behind the Roi building and I hear that most of the yakuza claims on the TSK building have now gone so that whole corner will be rebuilt when it clears current court proceedings.

So with the slow but real revitalization in Roppongi and the city's attempt at cleaning up Kabukicho, where are the Yakuza and African mafia (Nigerian/Cogonese) going now to extort...I mean...cash in on the night life scene? Is it to Shibuya and shita-machi (aka east side)?

PS - Mulb...Long time no post..say hi! to Captain and GJ next time you see them. Back in the Big Mikan to visit in next few months.

Hey, my mate's cousin owns the Roi Bldg. You shouldn't equate those outstanding businessmen with the yaks! It was just bad timing that caused him to lose his two pinkies in an unfortunate revolving door accident!

Continuing the programme, the shopkeeper's association has just announced that they will be working with the Shuto Kosokudoro to spend 45 million yen to clean up the overhead highway at Roppongi Crossing and give it a new sign to replace the "High Touch Town" logo. Minato Ward will also be making a financial contribution. The design for the new logo has not yet been finalized but several young artists are said to be in the running for the project. The logo will be used for the area's street lights and the association also wants to use it as the basis for a series of local souvenirs. The makeover should be completed within the year.

This is the new logo for the expressway. The Tokyo Reporter is on top of this story.

Thanks Mulboyne. Great logo; they must have spent a good chunk of the 45 million yen on its design. I really dig the lowercase n juxtaposed against the uppercase G. ROPPOnGI. That is deep, man.

Almond Cafe on Roppongi crossing will close tomorrow. It opened in 1964 and quickly became a local landmark and meeting place. According to one Japanese report, the manager, Fujio Ishida, is not too sad because the cafe is scheduled to move back after the site is redeveloped. In the meantime, it will re-open in a building around the corner as the map below shows. Ishida says that the current building can probably lay claim to being the oldest in Roppongi, especially following the recent wave of redevelopment. The downside, however, is that it began to look more shabby than venerable so the plan to rebuild has been in the works for a couple of years now.

If you mean "Almond", it's just a landmark like saying, "Meet me at The Dog (Hachiko) at 7 tonight."
The Almond coffee shop is/was just a place to get out of the rain.

You forgot to mention that it was and is the "in" corner to pick up a handbill from a Nigerian....
