Seriously though, that guy was clearly nuts, and most sane people would not want to get too close to an insane person when they are quite agitated. (If I was a cop I would feel nervous getting close to him at that time too.) But the fact is, that guy was eventually apprehended without any significant injuries or property damage, so in my book I say the Japanese cops did okay.

Although personally I wished that the Japanese cops simply just tasered him immediately and quietly arrested him, before he started swimming and put on a big show in front of the media.

What bothers me more is that as foreigners in Japan, we have an uphill battle to fight against discrimination, negative stereotypes, and just plain ignorance by many in the Japanese population. This crazy guy does not help our cause! It does not matter that there many more cases of Japanese going nuts and doing far worse. The racists in Japanese will just focus on this one incident to justify their oppression against foreigners.

I think the average Japanese isn't "racist" by their own mentality, they just like to "generalise" - which for some other people may be the same thing.
