jacques parizeau reminds me all too much of blinky ishihara, and the attitude of teachers in some school systems towards anyone who they feel isn't pure laine enough has left a bad taste in my mouth more than once.

Lets pretend someone cares about people from Quebec or anything about Quebec. And lets pretend Canada isn't one big drug den. Then yes the people of Quebec might be worried about crime.

Japan also worries about foreigners rioting after an earthquake.

It's some sad piece of land in Canada where the French think they are French, but not really, because they are too Americanized for the French in Europe who are the real French, but despise and hate everyone that isn't French. Did I mention they have Celine Dion who is from Canada...I mean, Quebec which is different from Canada and from France entirely. They want to have independence(the Quebecian people), beats the hell out of me as to why. Maybe to be a Quebecian that speak French. In a nutshell.

my personal experience is that the people of quebec aren't trying to be "real french". personally, i find that rather derogatory. maybe i'm biased because of my own lineage.

while the roots may be french, it is most certainly a culture different from france and from the so-called "rest of" canada. much of the language, derided so pejoratively by many people in france is by far much truer to the "original". this becomes very evident reading any "french" magazine published in france compared to something published in quebec. the number of anglicisms is astonishing.

i've always enjoyed my time when i go there and yeah, speaking french while there goes a long way in being able to do so. no more than one should expect people in japan to speak english, one shouldn't presume people in quebec outside of montreal or the outaouais area to really do so. even if your french is horrible, an effort to do so is usually appreciated.

as for separatism, it's a very emotional thing and the people are quite split on it. i'm guessing if i were quebec born i could have even fallen into that category. it has the same roots as every separatist movement - a culture notably different from the surrounding or majority culture wants autonomy and self-determination. many in english canada are a little quick, if not blithe to say that a quebec that separates from canada could only fail.

I almost spit my morning coffee all over the screen when I read "tête carrée". I haven't heard that in years. For those of you who don't know what we are talking about, "tête carrée" is what the typical French kid calls an English kid. On the other hand English kids call them French frogs, or something else.
I agree with James as well that Quebec is very much like Japan with its not too subtle racism. One small story, a very nice Canadian Catholic sister, recalled to me her latest trip to Montreal her home. You have to imagine this quote said with a fairly heavy French accent, " you know Michael, the metro in Montreal is like the United Nations, with so many blacks and other people, it's not real Montreal anymore." Lovely woman, just a Quebec racist.

I agree with James as well that Quebec is very much like Japan with its not too subtle racism.

i had a teacher like that in high school. a very closed-minded individual. there was this black kid in our class, one of very few at our predominantly italian school, that i swear she had it in for. he was not an academic kid by any means, was on the football team etc. she would consistently mark this kid lower on assignments and presentations compared to peer evaluations, which ended up being spot-on for damn near everyone else.

drawing further comparison to japan, another thing i found was that it was assumed (when found out) because i was a tê]despite being fluent[/I] that i couldn't speak or understand what was being said around me. this rings all too familiar. i don't think the term "racism" applies in this case so maybe simple bigotry or discrimination.

I found Mordecai Richler's "Oh Canada, Oh Quebec" a decent treatment of the issues the country and the province have with each other. Not really a great book for those not already somewhat familiar with the situation, but really interesting for his local outsider's point of view.

I find Mordecai Richler to be a bigot anti-Quebec and anti-French just like the lot of you on here who are anti-anything Japanese. But yeah, most of the discussion about Quebec so far has been bang on and the comparisons to Japan are fairly acurate with the exception that there is a little bit of immigration in Quebec. You can be a 10th generation Quebecer of Laotian ancestry and you will never be considered a true Quebecer.
