Is your software possessed by demons?

Postby Steve Bildermann » Tue Jun 24, 2003 4:26 pm

OSAKA -- Doomsday cult AUM Shinrikyo's Osaka branch leader has been arrested for duping a mentally unstable man into handing over his collection of books and computer software by telling him his belongings were possessed by demons, police said.

Ghost in the Shell

Postby kurohinge1 » Tue Jun 24, 2003 5:12 pm

No demon in my machine, but perhaps a ghost in the shell ....

The ghost of a petty, little-minded beaurocrat who enjoys waiting until I have the most amount of unsaved info on screen before crashing the system !

Spyware Demons phone home to the Collective

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue Jun 24, 2003 5:18 pm

GomiGirl wrote:I sometimes feel possessed by ...the spyware manufacturers? They are all evil and must be destroyed!!!

Last week I just upgraded firewall from the hardware one in my Linkk-Sys router and the build-in one in OS X to include the proactive firewall called "Little Snitch". Damn if it didn't catch Eudora Pro (paid for) trying to "phone home" with my email stats of the week. Grrrrrrr.

I expect nasty spyware from Microsoft Office or Adobe trying to "phone home" to the Collective, but I am real pissed that there are tons of other programs doing it now without my permission. More nasty is that normal firewalls and virus programs don't flag spyware. Arrrrg!

Hey Taro, tell me what kind of set up you have.

So I can set up something similar.

The only firewall I have is Norton Firewall.

It's decent, but I know it won't catch spyware. It only catches stuff INCOMING. Not outgoing.

GITS 2 was a manga that picked up a few years after the first manga/movie. I haven't read it, becuase there are censorship "issues" with the English versioin.

Currently the GITS: Stand Alone Complex series is coming out on DVD. (All the DVDs for the series may already be out in Japan.) It's an alternate reality tale using the same characters, but it's written as though the first movie (and part 2) never happened.

well, you know the first couple of lupin series had a lot more nudity / raciness in the dialog..

gatchaman was the first anime show i saw..

and read the manga! gits manga is 1 billion times better than the average, albeit pretty and nicely sdk'd movie..

i saw it on sale here in bilingual format for around 2k yen the other week, i caught it when it was originally trans.. what a series! what comedy! but, time constraints on the movie etc.. and oishii only seems to allow sharp moments of humour, dry at that in his productions..

some parts of the sacox bgm are stunning.. have yet to see it tho..

Appleseed! now theres some classic Shirow right there! forget the trash oav *or was it a movie i forgot* and go right for the manga... that shit will knock you out! especially hagane kotetsu! he rocks!

Yes, the music in GITS:SAC is great. The opening theme is actually in Russian. (not sure why)

And the opener has at least two versions. (I've only got the first DVD, so I'm not sure if there are more.) One is traditional animation and the other is CGI.

Actually, Norton Internet Sec. 2003 flags some outgoing and ingoing stuff, but not everything (like the RealNetworks software that comes packaged with Win2K).

Here are a couple of apps for Win systems I found useful.

Active Ports - what's going where
http://www.protect-me.com/freeware.html

Startup Control Panel - you may be able to cancel or block some apps before they 'phone home'

Good luck and hope this helps.
