Well, this confuses the heck out of me. My current Tokyo-issued license is over 18 months old and has the IC chip in it. There was a whole rigamarole at the office where I had to pick out PIN codes (which I have since completely forgotten), etc. I thought licenses were issued by the National Police Agency, so I assumed these IC chips were rolled out nationwide in 2007.

For a minute there - I thought it was my mate, Sample Sample. But he doesn't look like that... might be a relative though.
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

Fresh back from doing my extensive research on Wikipedia...

Turns out the local / prefectural police are also involved, and the roll-out schedule is:

2007: Tokyo, Ibaraki, Saitama, Hyogo, Shimane
2008: Most remaining prefectures
2009 January: Hokkaido, Yamagata, Niigata, Kanagawa, Nagano, Aichi, Fukuoka
2010 or afterwards: Ishikawa

Updated my license in a very southern prefecture this past summer, and no IC deal here...

My driver's license already has IC chip embedded in it. Does that mean I have to get another one?
