Well, the main event is Ms. Tsuru's brother's wedding on 12-7, still not sure what else we're going to do when we're there for two weeks. We were thinking of hitting up Hokkaido, and trying to find some real tsuru while soaking in the many onsens. And Tokyo is always nice of course ;)

Shinsei is good, but they're becoming less good. Citibank is okay, too.

Still, it's nice to get some interest on your foreign currency holdings, and for that an acquaintance at Credit Suisse steered us to HSBC. If you can scrape together sen-man-yen for their "premier" banking, you get a good exchange rate as well as (nominal) interest on your currencies. Their interest rate chart was interesting: it was about 2.3% for CHF (the only currency I'm interested in - it's pegged to gold) and over 7% for NZ dollars.

The yen climbed to 97.34 versus the dollar as of 9:34 a.m. in Tokyo from 97.68 late yesterday in New York.

Against the euro, the yen gained to 124.27 from 124.78.

Does anyone think Tara Aso's enormous cash handout may weaken the value of the yen? I'm thinking they may just print more money, but I don't understand enough about currencies to know if the magical appearance of 2 trillion yen is enough to impact the exchange rate significantly when taking into account all the other crap going down in the global economy.

I read that during the Weimar hyperinflation period, people with gold did the best. As you know cash becomes worthless during these periods. I guess worst case, buy a stack of toothbrushes to trade with or somthing usefull like that.

I am starting prep's anyway, got some metal, 100kg rice, and other items.

The sheeple have a false sense of security, a few runs of bad weather may lead to crop failure, even in so called 'rich' countries, starvation could be just around the corner.

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

Nice one. I take it that is in Japan. A few of the websites I check for realestate in Japan made me understand just how cheaply one can purchase large amounts of forest in Japan. The further you get from civilisation the cheaper it is!

The data was a lot worse than expected at negative 530,000 but JPY is at 92 now. If it breaks 90 it will be 85 very quickly and then rebound. Not very good for the Japan economy.

Yes, and it is currently sitting at 87.75 after getting as low as 87.12.

I'd like to think that it has hit bottom and is going to rebound but if the j-govt doesn't match the moves of the us-fed then we're in for a lot more pain.

This increase in the dollar is temporary. With Bernanke out there buying long term treasuries to force yields lower the dollar will get a beating. I am afraid that 75 to 80 yen to the dollar is not unthinkable. The rise in the YEN/USD will not be as much a problem as I had initially thought because the exchange rate vs. the Euro is still pretty good plus all the raw material import prices will be cheaper compensating for the higher exchange rate. Oil prices in yen and all commodities when priced in yen have crashed making people like Kawasaki, Fuji and Mitsubishi very happy.

I'm not disagreeing with you as the BoJ doesn't seem to be willing to take necessary measures to adjust the exchange rate.

However, I do wonder why you feel the dollar will fall against the yen but maintain strength against the Euro. Any elaboration?
