Blood Type Love Affair

Postby Mulboyne » Fri Dec 05, 2008 9:25 am

Telegraph: Japan in grip of blood type obsession
Japan is in the grip of a blood type obsession, with an increasing sector of the population subscribing to the theory that blood types determine every aspect of personality, temperament and interaction with others. Testimony to the nation's love affair with blood type analysis are four books analysing the subject which have occupied places in Japan's top ten best seller lists for the past year. It emerged today that more than 5 million copies of a series of books based on Instruction Manual for People with Type B Blood appealing in particular to women in their twenties and thirties - have reportedly been bought so far this year...more...

By what logic is this evidence of an increasing belief in blood type personality analysis? Here's effectively the same article in the Guardian

Being B+, I find this statement somewhat questionable as nothing under 50 has even looked in my direction in month, unless I have promised to buy her a mansion and make mass transfers of cash to her bank account.

I can never remember my blood type. It seems the fact that I do not know it is of great amazement to Japanese.

Of course if I ever need a transfusion I would hope the hospital would test me rather than taking my word for it.

The history of the blood type fad is interesting ... and dark.

The Nazis used the differences in blood type distribution between races to justify their claim of racial supremacy. Knowing Japan's admiration for Nazi policies at the time, it's reasonable to assume that there may be a connection.

Apparently Takeji Furukawa's study that introduced the theories to Japan was commissioned by the militarist government in an attempt to find a way to breed more aggressive soldiers. His "study," however, involved a pathetically small sample group (estimated to have been between 10 and 20 people), and the whole thing is basically untenable.

Of course that hasn't stopped people from making small fortunes off the gullibility of the general public.

I have no idea what my blood type is. I tend to ask drunk friends what they think my blood type is as their BAC tends to get them to reveal more about what they think about me.....and as a result.....I'm a very sad person.:violin:

I don't know my blood type. My absolute favorite response to Japanese people asking about my blood-type is to ask them to guess. Of course, I tell them they are wrong regardless of how they guess.

The fact that not a few of Japanese believe blood type divination proves that most of Japanese brains still are pre-modern.
If you deny blood type divination in Japanese internet forums, you will see many non-rational and hysterical responses.

I have no idea what my blood type is which as Bucky mentioned above always causes total disbelief. (I usually just answer "red" or sometimes "warm".)

As outrageous as he usually is, I am forced to occasionally agree with Take-poo. This blood-type crap can, and I'm sure often has, hurt people, and it's been hot in Japan for a long long time.

No problem for me, as a type O, I generally scare them into submission. :ninja2:

When I was teaching in the US I had a student from Korea that was studying at the police university in Seoul. A discussion about this came up and I said it was all BS and only Japanese and Korean people cared about it. She said that there were scientific studies done by the South Korean police that proved blood type was a legitimate way to determine personality type. What a crock o' shit.

Blood type analysis in Japan is quite common, but it seems to me as an equivalent to our western astrology. Most people some kind of believe in it, and a few people respect it very much.

It seems there is nothing there that says current Japan is pre-modern.

au contraire, blood types can and do change - one notable cause being bone marrow transplants where the donor type differs from the recipient's, the recipient's blood type will eventually change. a liver transplant has also been known to induce such changes.

AHA! Now we're on to something.

Telegraph, 16 Mar 2008
New kidney 'changed my whole personality'

A woman claims to have undergone a complete "personality transplant" after receiving a new kidney.

Cheryl Johnson, 37, says she has changed completely since receiving the organ in May. She believes that she must have picked up her new characteristics from the donor, a 59-year-old man who died from an aneurysm.

Now, not only has her personality changed, the single mother also claims that her tastes in literature have taken a dramatic turn. Whereas she only used to read low-brow novels, Dostoevsky has become her author of choice since the transplant. ..more..

yeah, there is definitely anecdotal evidence of personalities changing with organ donations. instances of people's food preferences and temperaments changing to reflect those of the donor. that it happens at all is fascinating and definitely lends credence to the whole being more than the sum of its parts.

Re: Blood Type Love Affair

Postby matsuki » Mon Nov 05, 2012 11:10 am

Ugh, one of my most recent lemurs keeps going on and on about this shit. I tried my best to esssplain why this shit even became popular here, it's Nazi source, and how there is no scientific basis for it but all that got dismissed as "being too komakai!" This one also seems to love those horoscope/fortune tellers...she doesn't make a good case for the "appreciate me for my mind, not my body! crowd. Good thing she has a nice pair of something to appreciate.

Anyhow, I zombied this thread to ask how you guys deal with this blood type myth bullshit. Since it comes up everywhere, what is your usual response when a J-robot asks you your blood type?
