J-Pet-Grooming Services: Caveat Emptor

Postby Catoneinutica » Wed Dec 03, 2008 11:24 am

I took the cute (if I do say so...) little Italian man in my avatar to a pet grooming shop a couple of blocks away for a nail-and-whisker trimming and bath. Hadn't gone there before, but it was close by, so what the heck. Went to pick him up, and the pong of the perfumed shampoo they'd used on him just about knocked me over. Hours later, he began to develop a severe allergic reaction. Took him to the vet - yeah, it was the shampoo; not suitable for a short-haired dog; grooming shop should've known better. The vet gave li'l Niccolo a steroid shot and he's okay now.
I told Ms. Catone that the hag at the grooming shot should at least refund the 5000-yen grooming charge, if not the vet bill. So she called her, and the grooming woman hemmed and hawed and said, oh, she's really worried about Niccolo and she'll be more careful in the future. Having said that, she was about to hang up, and my wife said, uh, what about refunding our bill? She said she'd have to think about it. WTF? She must be desperately hard up or desperately ketchi.
Anyway, the whole pet grooming biz is as unlicensed and unregulated as a Shanghai street vender, so watch out. You apparently have zero recourse if they injure your li'l friend (no, not that li'l friend, greji).

The yakuza were long rumored to be involved in the pet grooming business (no joke!)... I'd never trust them with a goat of mine..

That certainly sounds plausible. And isn't that just the essence of Japan: shitty, unregulated, unlicensed Chinese-quality goods and services for Scandinavian prices.
Anyway, we'll go back to taking the li'l Italiajin to the pet shop at Chiba Sogo, where they seem to know what they're doing, even though that place, too, has a whiff of ayashii about it.

-trimming his nails ourselves is not an option, alas.

Why not? There is a hot product here in the U.S. these days that is basically a revolving belt sander with a guard that basically grinds a pets nails down and rounds them so they arent sharp. It's REALLY popular. My friend and his Jwife just got one for their four dogs and they love it. I can't remember the name, but I'll look it up.

He's a skittish little beast, and I have a feeling the deep hum of the grinder will freak him out. Still, I'm going to give it a try - thanks AO.

I believe what AO is refering to is called Pedi Paws....I imagine it will be J TV soon enough at the low, low price of 5000-6000 yen

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

The hum really does freak them out, but I think it bothers them more when you stick them in a grinder.....

Ask any Korean chef (that one was for you, Take).

The old snack-mama-cum-pet-groomin' hag refunded our money and paid for the vet bill.

-catone
-and here I am posting at 11 PM on a Sat. Next stop: greji's assisted living center.
