Who cares about Japan. It still kicks the iPhone`s ass in every way.

It may do that but it doesn't help anyone on FG who is in Japan. ;)

Then hopefully, these are not carrier-locked so you can just get one overseas and shove your Japanese SIM card in to it to get it to work.

You can bet the emojis don't work though. :(

You can always get carrier unlocked phones overseas. It costs $$$ if you want a recent phone but they are available and it is perfectly legit.

You can get the settings for Softbank so that you can transfer data via 3G but Docomo refuses to give this information out.

I have no idea if a western Nokia phone will support Japanese at all but I would suspect that "no" or "poorly" are the most likely answers. Windows Mobile phones can often be made to support Japanese with a bit of work.

Probably the easiest thing is to forget Nokia and get a Blackberry via Docomo, an HTC phone from Docomo or Softbank, or get an iPhone.

A phone is a phone is a phone. They all make and receive calls. BFD.

The iPhone is a Video iPod with the largest display and the only full browser on any phone. Plus GPS and PDA stuff, and a phone. People buy the iPhone Touch just to get those features minus the phone.

Yes, the only full browser on any phone if you forget Opera and the fact that the iPhone doesn't support Adobe Flash.

That said, I'd buy one if I didn't live in Japan.

Wisemen bring Jesus Phone (free) cut-and-paste
---Jobsian hole filled---
12th December 2008 22:21 GMT
How-to Thanks to a new, free, web-based service launched today, you can now cut and paste text snippets between Safari and Mail on your iPhone.
As The Reg pointed out in our recent overview of Apple hardware, the Jesus Phone's lack of a cut-and-paste capability is one of its more annoying limitations. As we wrote, the lack of cut-and-paste is "a true pain, especially when quoting Web content in emails or moving info from Notes into email messages."...more...

My daughter's Ipod Touch went through a wash cycle in the laundry. Mrs. Bucky failed to notice it in a pocket prior to loading the washing machine. Glad I was not in the middle of that confrontation.:shake:

The Ipod is now resting in a sealed plastic bag with a couple cupfuls of raw rice as I saw suggested on the internet. Supposedly this technique helps draw the moisture of out the device. I will try firing it up this weekend after a week of it sitting in the rice.

The question is where is Mrs. Bucky at the present? I have a similar problem wih my resident rice cooker, who seems to never check pockets before washing, or else is of the belief that all electronical devices owned by her husband are wash and wear....

How about the owner of said electrical devices ensures they are not still in the pockets before the clothes go into the wash.

It may amuse you to know that iPhones (and presumably iPod Touches as well) have water damage indicators. It's a little sticker, you can look down the headphone socket and see it if you look really close.

I am sure your iPod suffered far less than my poor Montblanc wallet/passport case that I recently ran through the washing machine. It is ruined. The leather was in perfect shape even after 15 years, now it's perfectly shapeless and dull, and some of the seams are coming unstitched. I decided to look up what it would cost to replace it, holy shit, $400! That's like triple what I paid for it. I should have invested all my money in premium leather goods.
I looked on their website to see if I could send it to them for reconditioning, I couldn't find any contact except tech support for their fountain pens. I thought, hell, a $400 wallet better come with tech support. So I wrote to them, and amazingly, they wrote back, suggesting I send it to them for reconditioning. They didn't say what that would cost but I suspect it will be almost as much as buying a new wallet.

All Softbank phones have them, generally under the battery pack of the phone. I'm not sure about other carriers in Japan but I would guess it is the same.

This is another thing that probably everyone here knew except me... Gmail supports emoji from docomo/au/softbank. There are a few "issues" however:

1) From Firefox (and probably IE) everything shows up perfectly. So this is great from your PC!

2) From Safari on the iPhone I can see static emoji but animated emoji show up as a question mark in a box.

3) From the iPhone's email client I can see the animated emoji but the rest of the message (including the static emoji) is all mojibake.

So far I have only tested this with messages from Softbank. In PC browsers other carriers do work but I have no idea how (or if) it will work from iPhone Safari or Mail.

Success!!!!

After storing the Ipod Touch in a bag of uncooked rice for over a week in an effort to remove moisture after it went though a complete wash cycle in the washing machine -- it fired up!

We will see how well it works over the long run, but as of this writing, it is happily chirping Itunes and so far seems no worse for wear. I am crossing my fingers that it will keep working.

Great to hear that the iPod is working! I hope it continues to do so and I'll definitely remember the rice idea if something similar happens in the Lurker household...

I haven't loaded this up myself but there is currently (at least in the US) a free iphone/itouch off line J to E/E to J dictionary at the itunes app store.
They say its only free for 1/1/09 so this is likely only good for another few hours or so

It claims to have 115,000 entries, 12,000 kanji and even takes handwriting input for searches, but I will fess up that my J skilz are so poor, I am in no position to judge the quality of the product...but free is free

Nice find and thanks for sharing!!

I've downloaded and installed, will play with it a bit later on. Looks like version 2 is coming this month and that it will be a free upgrade from the current 1.0.2 version. They're promising example sentences, flash cards, and "even more exciting features."

can anyone compare this to the lower level Genius series? im using the Genius dictionary for the DS and would like to upgrade. As there doesnt seem much chance of a new version being released for theDS, this might be the way to go, as it'll probably be more upgradable than a Canon/sharp/casio.

FINALLY cut & paste comes to (jailbroken) iPhones. Unfortunately it doesn't work in Safari (yet?) but it does work everywhere else.

LastPass also looks cool -- adds autocomplete and to most any browser, including Safari on the iPhone.

Push Mail for the iPhone

Postby FG Lurker » Sat Jan 24, 2009 4:05 pm

I had no idea, but Yahoo provides push mail service free to the iPhone.

I set it up but my iPhone is a bit borked right now so even me.com push isn't working most of the time. It does apparently work and it is a supported feature. They also have the very Gmailish ymail.com domain now. (Yahoo iPhone push has apparently been available for a year so maybe everyone but me knows about it.)
