Anti-Christmas

Postby canman » Tue Dec 23, 2008 8:51 am

Have any of you heard about this anti-Christmas campaign going on. I think it is being fueled by a bunch of ni-channel people, or maybe Takechan, who don't have any girlfriends or anything to do at Christmas.
The argument is that Japan is not a Christian country so why do they have to celebrate this holiday.
I don't know for sure, and perhaps it was introduced by US troops stationed here, but Japanese companies have really latched onto it and really rely on the extra income garnered from all the extra sales.
I could understand if these people(ni chan) group wanted to return New Years to its original style, everybody goes home and nothing is open and the whole family watches the stupid kohaku song contest, but they aren't for that, only to rid Japan of Christmas.

In that case they'd better get rid of Valentine's day and Halloween as well.

But there's no real "celebration" of Christmas here anyway. Other than the very small Christian minority nobody even thinks about what it means. It's just another excuse to sell stuff (as it is to a large extent in the west these days). And the idea that it's a time when you book a hotel room with your girlfriend is just totally Japanese.

But I think returning the Japanese New Year to total nation-wide shutdown is a great idea! There was something very peaceful and special about those times. I actually enjoyed the yearly railway strikes as well (how many remember those?). They provided a brief respite from the incessant madness.

There was an anti-Valentine's Day campaign this year as well. I agree that it is completely commercial here, but who cares. As a Christian myself, I don't worry about how the Japanese celebrate or what they do, as long as I know and remember what the true meaning of the day is.
I also agree that the total shut down of Japan would be a good thing, but it will never happen. It seems you can never go back, only forward.

Christmas here doesn't have any spiritual meaning, or even any charitable meaning. It's purely a commercial event. Christmas isn't even celebrated on the 25th here, everything happens on the 24th... Love hotels, high-end restaurants, department stores, and the big foreign brands all love "Christmas" in Japan.

I can't imagine that this is quite what Jesus would have in mind for his birthday celebration. Who knows though, maybe he'd be happy seeing so many virgins deflowered in celebration of his big day. ;)

I cant imagine jesus had in mind that december 25th would be his birth date when he was actually born September 29....

I'm not sure when he was born (is there actually any agreement?) but it definitely wasn't December 25th.

Does it REALLY matter one way or the other when he was born?

If people do or don't want to celebrate Christmas for whatever reason, it's fine with me; just don't piss in anyone else's punch bowl, please.

I think Jesus was a real man. These days I'm just not sure about the cult that formed around him. ;)

and a Happy Hannukah (Channukah, Hanukkah, etc....the reason it never caught on, is that it is too difficult to spell), and a Happy Kwanza.

Alright. I may be asking the wrong question in the wrong thread, but where is a decent church to go to in Tokyo for the Chistmas mass?

I am always surprised on Christmas Eve by the people who show up for mass. I wonder if they think it is romantic or what, but I don't think back home I saw a lot of non-Christians wandering in to church on Christmas Eve. But everyone is always so nice, they try and find them seats and make sure they understand what is going on. What I hate is when they get up and leave during the middle of the mass. Some only come for the candle service at the beginning. If you are going to come at least stay for the whole mass.
