The Osaka Quarter Pounder Scam

Postby kusai Jijii » Sun Dec 28, 2008 9:49 am

I was outside a Mickie D's store in Kyoto on the 23rd of Dec. There were a couple of posters out the front hailing the triumphant debut of the Quarter Pounder in Kansai. The dates on the poster said Dec 23, 24, and 25. How good is this, I though, and went inside to order a quarter pounder. The ensuing exchange went like this:

Staff: Welcome, eat in or take away.

KJ: Eat in.

Staff: May I take your order?

KJ: Yes please. One Quarter Pounder. Set please. Coke.

Staff: Oh, I'm very sorry. We dont have Quarter Pounders here.

KJ: Really? Then why do you have 3 giant posters plastered to the front window of the store advertizing the grand release of the quarter pounder in Kansai from the 23rd of December?

Staff: Oh yes. Well sir, if you look at the fine print, those posters aply only to our Midosuji-ten store in Shinsaibashi, Osaka.

KJ: Oh, of course. Silly me. I should have read the fine print.

Staff: Would you like something else?

KJ: No, thanks anyway though. I'll head off to your Midosuji-ten store in fucking Shinsaibashi, OSAKA to get my Quarter Pounder. Thanks for being so helpful though.

Well, I walked out of the shop, crossed the street, and had me a Spicey Mos Cheese Burger. I thought that was the end of it, until my mate rang me last night and asked me if i saw the news about the release of the Quarter Pounder at the Midosuji-ten store in Shinsaibashi, Osaka. I hadn't. According to him, (sorry no links yet) there was a line stretch a FUCKING KILOMETER of people there waiting to get a Quarter Pounder. And thats not all. It has emmerged that most of the line were paid McDonalds employees who were told to stand in line as part of some big Mickie D's publicity stunt.

Anyone else heard about this?

Hundefar posted an article about the people paid to wait in line in the McDonald's Rip-Off thread. I think you're the first person to report having seen it first-hand though!

EDIT: oops, I mean second-hand.

How anyone can go to a McD's across the street from a Mos Burger is completely beyond me. Mos rules.

I really like Mos, but all their hamburgers taste the same to me.. and they end up turning to mush halfway through.. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;)

It didn't turn to mush either. :p

I must say though, McDonalds in Japan is far better quality than the garbage we get at the same franchise in Western Europe. And now you got BK moving back in, sheeeeet you people don't know how lucky you are.

Tsuru - I have never been a big Mos Burger fan, but after reading your fantastic review above, I was thinking I'd give them a second chance. I finally went last week and tried to exactly replicate your experience. Unfortunately the spicy sandwich was seasonal, so I had to get a non-spicy teriyaki chicken sandwich, and I ordered a set with fries and a melon soda.

I was very optimistic going in, but I have to say I was a little disappointed. The ingredients seemed fresh, but it was just not that tasty. I don't like that type of softer, thicker french fries personally. And the quantities left me feeling hungry, even after eating the whole "L" size 710 yen set. Competitors like McDonalds leave me feeling full (and pleasantly sick) with a less expensive set.

I also got to enjoy my meal while watching the guy next to me borrow his girlfriend's mirror so he could trim his eyebrows at the table and apply his lip gloss.

We don't have Burger King down here in Kansai :( but we do have a few Wendy's. Wendy's burgers are way, way better than MOS or McDs. Great fries too, and a small chili really hits the spot on a winter afternoon. :)

If you ever find yourself in Kansai and want a good burger for dinner though I suggest Tin's Hall in Tennoji. 300yen jockys of Asahi til 9pm and awesome burgers. (All their food is good actually, not just the burgers.)

The GF actually looked more like AO's type, so I passed. Besides, I was fresh out of lip gloss at the moment.

For what it's worth, I think maybe the larger fries are a European thing... I never really liked the standard french fries you get with a normal burger meal, so the first time I ever went to Mos I was pleasantly surprised when served thick, almost Flemish style fries which turned out to be properly salted as well. While you don't get mayo with your Mos burger meal, it's true what they say about Dutch people: we do like to drown them. The nice thing about the wide fries is that speaking in engineering terms, wider fries are capable of holding more mayonnaise per unit, which is nice considering I always have to eat several of the McD/BK ones at once to get enough sauce out of the cup at once. :p

Or chips, as we call call them here in the anti-Atkins shell-torn sterling zone.
