Government Considering Tax On Pets

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Dec 29, 2008 7:54 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Yomiuri: Pet tax to be discussed by LDP Diet members
The introduction of a pet tax to promote animal protection is likely to be discussed shortly by the Liberal Democratic Party's federation of Diet members, it has been learned. The federation, led by Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Kunio Hatoyama, aims to improve pet safety by reducing the number of pet owners who abandon their pets. The plan will impose a unified tax on pet purchases. An increasing number of pet owners are abandoning their pets for trivial reasons. About 374,000 pets were taken off the streets by local governments throughout the country as of the end of fiscal 2006, 91 percent of which were euthanized...more...

Yes but before the tax comes in, then there will be heaps of abandoned pets of people who don't want to pay the tax. These probably wouldn't be abandoned otherwise.

This wouldn't be me of course - I love my crazy cat.

it's really hard to see this as anything but another cash grab by strapped municipalities but reading through the article, it would seem that it's only to apply to pet purchases as opposed to a yearly tax.

if that is in fact the case, i wouldn't expect to see everyone dumping their pets, as tempting as it may be in some cases.

It may also be a tax on the purchase of new pets. If that is the case it may a high percentage like 10-15%.
