Happy New Year 2009!

Postby FG Lurker » Thu Jan 01, 2009 12:24 am

Well, if you're reading this you survived 2008! Here's hoping that 2009 is a better year for everyone.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Happy new year to all! I hope 2k9 is better for everyone. My new year is working and watching the NHK special. Not much of a life, but it's better than new year in Roppongi. Some real crazy people there.

Last night started off looking like it was going to be shit but ended pretty well. I hope that's a sign of things to come because the start of '09 is already shaping up to be a rough one.

But enough of my bitching ...

Happy New Year!!!

The guy in the flat below me had a party that lasted until 9.30 this morning. I kept waking up this morning trying to ID the tunes he were playing. It all sounded extremely weird when half asleep.

Happy new year!

Happy New Year from Korea.
Ended up going night skiing somewhere around Pyeonchaek. Didn't freeze my ass off and didn't pass out in a snow bank. Ski resort was open until 4:30 but quit around 1:30 to go drinking.

did the meiji shrine thing. too many fucking gaijins there. my guess it's like a 10 to 1 ratio of gaijin to nihonjin, and this is conservative since there are no doubt a lot of chinese with facemasks i assumed were japanese. jesus.

happy new year FG and let's have an even more fucked 2009!

I did it a couple of years ago and didn't see many. Did you go during the day? I waited in line and went in at the stroke of midnight. Maybe that's why.

She should be worried about that trap door right under her, too.

Meiji-jingu at midnight on new year is way more deserving of that "you're a fool to do it twice" line than Fuji. When I went and lined up for 3-4 hours there weren't many gaijin. The sensible people probably hit a bar and then go over on Jan 1.

Yes, a happy, or at least better than 2008, New Year to all! (with 1 or 2 notable exceptions...) :devil2:

Our New Year celebration was quiet this year - we just watched the ball drop in Times Square via CNN, he whipped up some toshi-koshi soba and ozoni and the next day we went unsuccessfully in search of osechi ryori (my Resident Ronin's fault - he doesn't like to make reservations).

We could have partied on NYE, but RR wasn't feeling up to it which is both good and bad. I wanted to go, but I didn't want him drinking himself into total raving illness and insensibility as usual, so this is our first holiday season where he drank like a grownup!

Maybe this is an auspicious 2009 omen? :nice:

In search of that ever elusive graffiti that no one is ever interested in, the custom of "hatsumo" only appeared in Japan in the late part of Meiji. Before that, any "omairi" for New Years was referred to as "ehou". This meant traveling in a specific direction appropriate to the calendar and visiting a Shrine in that same direction. This is similar to the directions shown on calendars for good and bad luck and the ones used in laying out a new home.

The developement of the Shinbashi to Yokohama trainline which had a stop at Kawasaki Daishi made it convenient to travel to the famous shrine. The trains to Narita (Narita line and Keisei) started a publicity war, offering discount tickets and "tea sabisu" if you used their line to go to a shrine, which really kicked off the Hatsumo custom. It is in fact, only 100 years old or less, under that name....

It also really doesn't matter if it is a Shrine or Otera as the most famous Otera's after so many hundred years are considered as a Shrine as well.

Now, I know you just want to run to the nearest pub and recite this to all the fellows at the bar...

Do you realize that all those taped TV shows they have in the "dead week" were recorded back in December?

Damn, every show is a "variety" of some sort with the same fuckin recycled talentos.

The word rent was in italics which probably meant something. I will not go into further details.
