Mainichi: Campaign starts to stop men's stares at mixed bathing hot spring
A group of Aomori citizens concerned that leering men pose a threat to the practice of mixed sex bathing at one of the country's most famous hot spring resorts have started an organization to campaign against the practice. The Konyoku wo Mamoru Kai (Protect Mixed Bathing Association) is urging visitors to the Sukayu Hot Spring resort in Aomori not to stare at women bathers and make them feel uncomfortable. "It'd be a real shame if we were deprived of the traditional practice of mixed bathing," a spokesman for the association said...Sukayu has signs for men's and women's bathing areas, but there is nothing to separate the sexes when they dip into the bath. However, there has recently been an increase in male bathers who have sneaked around to gaze at the naked women there, prompting complaints and putting the practice of mixed bathing under threat...more...

Yomiuri: Women take to mixed bathing, but wary of 'alligators'
Communing without swimwear in mixed hot baths is enjoying a renaissance among young women. But do such women have any reservations about bathing with men they do not know?..."I can't bathe with my boyfriend at an ordinary hot spring," Chie Sasaki, 29, a company employee from Kawasaki, said. "At first, I felt embarrassed to enter a mixed bath, but I don't mind now as long as my boyfriend is with me"...Essayist Mayumi Yamazaki authored "Dakara Konyoku wa Yamerarenai" (That's Why I Can't Stop Mixed Bathing), a book that explains the allure of mixed bathing. Published in late October, the book prompted a flood of e-mails and other correspondence from women. "I thought my book would be furtively perused by men in bookstores," Yamazaki said. "So I was surprised to get so much positive feedback from women...I think women have far more curiosity [about mixed bathing] than men," Yamazaki said. "And it seems today's young women don't mind exposing their bodies to strangers." The boom in mixed bathing has brought with it some problems. Bath operators have been exasperated by breaches of etiquette committed by some bathers...One type of bather has proven particularly problematic--the "alligator man." The alligators linger in the baths for hours at a time, moving about the baths with their heads barely above the surface of the water as they edge nearer to female bathers--just like an alligator stalking its prey...more...

So, I guess there is still some hope for the future of J-masculinity!

Let's get real, ladies! I've never gone to a mixed bathing onsen, but if I did, and no guy tried to sneak a peek (or more), I'd be totally devastated. If that's not what J-fems want, why go? Communing with nature? Well, guys looking at wet naked women sounds natural to me...

I had a bearded clam at an onsen once, but I leave the oysters floating.

According to the Uncyclopedia, the bearded clam has a cousin, the Hairy Taco...
Just a few facts about the hairy taco:
When it comes to the interaction of Hairy Tacos and Humans, the Hairy Taco is usually eaten. Most people view the Hairy Taco as a finger food, while some enjoy it with a little sausage. In either case they are known to pulsate wildly before, during, or after.
Hairy Tacos usually have a black coat, however red, light yellow and sometimes even a white coated Hairy Taco can be found. In modern times, there have been sightings of Hairy Tacos with purple, green, orange, or pink hair.
Hairy Tacos have been known to 'play' with themselves when bored.
One should note that the Beardless Taco is not related to the Hairy Taco, even though they look very much alike.

I have been to mixed onsens a few times but always took a sarong with me for covering up when moving from bath to bath. This works well without looking like an idiot in a bathing suit.

But the guys are kinda creepy - they are usually there alone and are always perving at the foreign chicks. But the sarong stops their peeping efforts.

Bawdy bathers lead to closure of mixed onsen in Tochigi

Offensive acts by bathers, many of them filmed, have led to the indefinite closure of a mixed-gender hot spring bath at the popular Shiobara onsen resort here.

The local residents association that operates the Fudo no Yu open-air bath said it has received a number of complaints about “repeated cases of disorderly behavior by bathers.”

The association said that a dozen men and women started filming their lewd activities in the bath about a year ago.

The offenders also posted online invitations to others to join in the shenanigans, association members said.

“We are sorry, but it was breach of manners that was impossible to overlook,” said a 56-year-old senior member of the association. “We had no choice but to close the bath.”

The Fudo no Yu bath, widely featured in travel guides, is surrounded by a river and forest. It features a round open-air bathtub measuring 3 meters in diameter and a small bathhouse.

Visitors were allowed to use the unattended bath between 6:30 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Records show that the bath existed in the Meiji Era (1868-1912) and became its present form in the 1950s.

A day before its closure, onsen fans from Tochigi Prefecture and elsewhere enjoyed a soak at the bath while lamenting its pending closure. The bathtub was drained the following day.

And so another one bites the dust. That one, access was possibly just a little bit too convenient, and it had a bit of promotion in print and online, not for saucy action but as a bath for freeloaders. Unless you keep them secret, these baths disappear pretty quickly. There is a long list of wild, natural baths that have been ripped out by the local associations because they become too inconvenient to administer.

And what is it with that preview shot on the video? It is not a radon bath, she shouldn't be glowing like that!

So....they were filming AV in these? For all the onsen AV's there are out there, I'm surprised they bother shutting them down.

Well, this one you can basically see from the highway on the other side of the river. Not that you can see what anyone is getting up to from there (or indeed whether they are wearing anything).

I don't think the aim was to wipe out naughty videos at onsen. It was more that this was a bit of omotenashi provided by the local onsen ryokan organisation, and it was creating a reputation a little different to the one they sought. Most of these freebie onsens are filled with people who don't even buy a can coffee in the town (guilty as charged), so they are more of a burden on the community, and once the promotional value of them is doubtful, I can understand them abandoning them. It is sad to see this loss of access to natural bounty, but I also understand the reasons why the communities don't want to be lumbered with the responsibility.

If you owned land that had a natural onsen on it, drink and towel vending machines would seem to be a good idea...but if it was over run with "people who don't even buy a can coffee in the town" then I can certainly see that falling on it's face unless they charge a small admission fee. (the one I use when up in the Niigata mountains is 400yen....or you can buy passes at discount...and it's quite popular)
