Whaler Loses Man Overboard

Stuff: Search suspended for missing Japanese crewman
A search for a crewman reported missing from a ship in the Southern Ocean has been suspended. The Japanese Coastguard reported that a 31-year-old Japanese national had fallen overboard from the whaling vessel Kyoshin Maru No 2, the Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) said. The man was last seen at 5.30am (NZT) and failed to turn up for a watch at 7am, RCCNZ search and rescue officer Mike Roberts said. An extensive search of the ship failed to locate him, and the vessel turned back to search for him. RCCNZ was contacted by the Japanese Coastguard at 12pm and asked to take over co-ordination of the search. Mr Roberts said the difficult decision to suspend the search had been made after a careful analysis of the likelihood of survival for the missing man, and the search and rescue options available to them. "After speaking to the master of the vessel, we were able to establish the missing man was only wearing overalls when he went into the water. The water temperature is about 0degC and there is a 4m swell. "The maximum survival time in those conditions is an hour"...more...

So this means that the whalers can justify their mission as "revenge"?

Fallen or was thrown.

Ships are reportedly the easiest places to commit murder and get away with it. I remember stories from a Scottish navigator about how people with enemies would just go missing in the night - like the inconvenient crew member in a love triangle. And a more recent incident for him was an American newly married couple who had fought and the husband had mysteriously disappeared that night. Bloody marks around the balcony led to viewing of CC camera vision that showed the wife had struck the husband over the back of the head with a champagne bottle while he was out on the balcony smoking or something, and then pushed him over the rail. He'd held on for a while before falling to his fate. Without the camera being there, it would've been just another mystery and the women would've stayed on the cruise rather than disembarking for possibly a long tour of a Turkish prison.

Or the Japanese whaler could've just fallen over.

i'm sure we can all look forward to not watching the inevitable and horribly produced made-for-tv drama portraying the hardship of whalers and depicting them as victims receiving no help from incompetent gaijin rescue operations.

Hey dude,
that exaggerated tragic hero/heroine thing is Korean, not Japanese.

Except that you just made that up Take-chan. Naughty boy!

If you read the article, and do the maths, you'll see that the poor soul would've been dead for anywhere between 4 to 5.5 hours BEFORE the Japanese crew bothered to ask the Kiwis for help. With the J-crew having done such a sterling job searching the ship for 5 hours, there was really little that the Kiwis could add.

But don't let the facts get in the way of your mania.

My sister-in-law came to stay with us over shogatsu, and the fucking TV was on 24/7. Walking through the living room, I noticed this fucking idiotic bimbo on some fucked up 'variety' show.
"Whats that idiotic wench famous for?'" I asked, almost rhetorically.
The sister-in-law helpfully sparked up "Oh, her? She's a 'baka-tarento'.
"She's famous for being stupid" added my wife, rather matter-of-factly.
Kinda sums up J-TV (and J-society) if you ask me.

i've never understood why they insist on only showing celebrities on tv here. especially game shows - what the hell is the point of giving away money and trips to people who are already fairly rich and famous?

i make a concious effort to turn off the tv whenever possible. drives me bonkers when the wife or outlaws complain that "there's nothing on" (as if there ever is anything worthwhile) yet insist on keeping it on.

Some other things work, to wit:
A farm wife called the local phone company to report her telephone failed to ring when her friends called - and that on the few occasions, when it did ring, her dog always moaned right before the phone rang.

The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile lady. He climbed a telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialed the subscriber's house.

The phone didn't ring right away, but then the dog moaned and
the telephone began to ring.

Climbing down from the pole, the telephone repairman found:

1. The dog was tied to the telephone system's ground wire with a steel chain and collar.

2.. The wire connection to the ground rod was loose.

3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signaling current when the number was called.

4. After a couple of jolts, the dog would start moaning and then urinate.

5. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone to ring.

Which demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning.

Time to start blaming the Sea Shepherd....

disrupting the search...
Anti-whaling activists deny they obstructed the search for a missing Japanese crewman feared drowned in freezing Antarctic waters.

The man fell overboard from the Japanese whaling fleet on Monday.

Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR) accused the Sea Shepherd vessel, which has been chasing the whalers for weeks and throwing stink bombs at them, of using their distress call to pinpoint their location.

According to the ICR, the protesters then lurked in the vicinity without its navigation lights on, disrupting the search.

I do wish Japan would halt their whaling practices, as I've said before, but I'm not following your logic wuchan.

wuchan wrote:1. Japan is exploiting international law for profit.

What do you mean by exploiting? This is an honest question. I'm not an expert on international law but what's the difference between "following" the law and "exploiting" the law? Lots of other industries are affected by international law, and companies profit within those restrictions, but I usually don't hear the term "exploit" to describe their methods.

wuchan wrote:2. Only Japan profits from the killing of whales in the south sea.

I assume that's an accurate statement, but are you suggesting all countries should share profits from their business with other countries?
wuchan wrote:3. Sea Sheppard buys old beat-up boats from other countries that would otherwise be dumped at the bottom of the sea.

Again, I assume you're correct here, but I don't think the basis of Japan's complaint is that the Sea Shepherd crew is wasting boats.
wuchan wrote:4. WAH WAH WAH WAH WE ARE JAPAN WE SHOULD DO WHAT WE WANT CAUSE WE LOST THE WAR WAH WAH WAH*

I think you are setting up a straw man argument here. I've never seen Japan using that as the justification for their whaling or for their complaints about Sea Shepherd.

I feel stupid defending Japan because, like I said, I am against their whaling activity. However, I don't think your points above are really the best talking points for arguing against the whaling or in support of Sea Shepherd.

sorry, more like exploiting loopholes in international law.
I assume that's an accurate statement, but are you suggesting all countries should share profits from their business with other countries?

I was leading up to the security council comment that you left out. By saying "only japan profits", I meant that if no one else makes or loses cash, no one else cares.
Again, I assume you're correct here, but I don't think the basis of Japan's complaint is that the Sea Shepherd crew is wasting boats.

back to everyone else making money.

Not sure. I have to review the research statutes to see if that is allowed. They may have to tan him before they can sell him.....
