Japanese Bad Breath, what is the cause?

Postby Big Booger » Tue Jun 17, 2003 2:00 pm

Anyone know why some Japanese have such stinky breath? Is it the food they eat? Their toothpaste? The lack of florene in the water? Poor brushing habits? The lack of dental floss? Genetics?

I'd love to know the answer.

Salaryman Death Breath is sign of ulcers, poor diet, poor baterial flora and alcholism. Real Godzilla Breath is sign of incipient or full-blown stomach cancer (Japan to leads the world in stomach cancer deaths).

Salaryman sewage breath comes from 3rd world-level dental hygiene. These guys have the worst teeth imaginable and rely on toothpicks instead of floss.

Add to that the stress and alcohol, and you have a recipe too horrible to experience.

The smell is commonly known as "Oyaji-Rot"

Back home, people keep saying how Japanese people are skinny and stuff from the food they eat, but somehow I'm not convinced.
Oyaji seem to run on a diet of rice, meat, and beer, and they almost never drink any water or brush their teeth. Let's also not forget the lack of decent deodorant in this country.

Then all you have to do is cram an army of them into a tiny train like sardines in humid Japanese weather, and you have a toxic gas that rivals anything that Iraq could have been brewing as a weapon of mass destruction.

I wonder why no one tells these old men about their nasty breath.. I mean it smells like the rotting flesh of a rats anus..

I floss daily and brush 2-3 times everyday. Is it because they are too lazy to do dental care? About the dental offices here, I was impressed. They have up-to-date methods of curing cavities.. I saw one guy getting a gauze type application on his teeth while I was in the dental office.

Their cleaning method is still rather rudimentary, but it works. The DH comes in with a scraper and scrapes for 10-15 minutes.. depending on how nasty the teeth are.

The price was cheap too for me to get a cleaning and 2 cavities plastered as they don't use fillings any more!

I paid 300 yen for that service... I can't imagine why ojisans can't visit the dentist once or twice a year???

I think it is laziness, and a pure lack of concern for the public who have to face their killer breath :D

Even OL have bad sushi-ass breath too :D

I would say that the who bad breath thing comes from the food they eat. The japanese diet is almost totally sea food based......which would explain why there are so many fish here.

To cure the bad breath tissue, I always carry about 50 packs of mints in my pocket...i can't bring myself to tell everyone that their breath stinks (thou to be frank, only a few people I know have this breath problem).

We need a T-shirt that says something like:

"Yo, your breath stinks."

in both English and Japanese with pictographs LOL

I never knew Japanese teeth enamel was twice as thick. Interesting. I guess the dentist office I went to was for Gaijin.. :P It was quick in and out in less than 30 minutes, went back twice in 3 months for a checkup. The cost was cheap. :D

My bad breath cure is to brush my teeth, floss, and not eat nasty shit :D

Bata kusai, "stinking of butter" is the traditional pejorative for gaijin and all things gaijin related. Conversely, I often reject engRish translations saying they're, 'natto kusai'.

They're more like oshiri kusai :D I mean very few people I came into contact with back in the states had bad breath.. I think it is because we are so conscious of it.. People, even old timers, take the time to check their hygiene. But here, ass mouth is everywhere. Miso can make your breath stink, as can sushi, sashimi, hakusai, ninniku, kimchee, and loads of other dishes...

I try to drink liquids throughout the day to keep my mouth refreshed.. but many Nihonjin don't do this, and they keep silent so often that their mouth becomes a smoldering inferno for bad breath bacteria.. it could even be hostile if the bacteria ever became contagious :D

Like bad breath herpes or something LOL

It's all about nooks and crannies!

Postby Naniwan Kid » Tue Jun 24, 2003 3:32 pm

My normal American mouth gets brushed 2 times a day But don't use Japanese toothpaste! after a year in Japan I came back with 12 cavaties  Needless to say I never used Japanese toothpaste again...

Anyway, the oyaji mouth is so crooked often times there are little caves inside their mouths where coffee, beer, nicotine, and all kinds of chicken, beef, nori can hide and grow. Since they ALL stink no one notices the other guys....

"Mr. Gargoyle, you're telling me $600 for dental care in Japan on your return consists soley of toothpaste. Do you really expect the IRS to allow this?"

*Hands agent tube of Japanese toothpaste* "Taste this."

*Agent touches tongue to open tube (nasty bastard) and promptly vomits*

*Agent 2 writes something on forms* "Sorry about the audit Mr. Gargoyle, see you next year"

Yes, I have family or friends send me Colgate Multipurpose (or whatever it's called) from the States and will gladly pay in postage multiples of the cost of the actual toothpaste just to avoid using the Japanese product.

The assimilation must stop somewhere! I draw the line at smelling like rotten ass-salaryman breath.

Gum

Postby canman » Sun Nov 05, 2006 6:11 pm

I know that a lot of people look down on gum chewers, but hell its a lot better than some of the breath I have to smell when talking to people. And speaking of gum have any of you noticed just how expensive gum has become in Japan. It all started when Xyilitol started marketing gum in the containers, for about Y550. Yesterday I was at Ito Yokado, or whatever the hell its called now, and they wanted Y819 for a bottle. What a rip off. Maybe you can get it cheaper at Matsumoto Kiyoshi, but we don't have any of those up here in Aomori.

I never knew that oyajis have such bad breath. I never kissed one or been close to one. The only Japanese I have been close to are the hot chicks most of whom take damn good care of themselves and almost never had a breath problem. How does the Japanese bad breath differ from lamb eating Australians or bad food eating Brittons?

Combine normal halitosis + nato breath + chain smoker breath = oyaji dragon breath

I mean, when my breath is funky, I can smell it and I take active steps to alleviate it.

bad breath

I would guess that the following items play a factor in J-Funky Breath:

1) natto
2) fish
3) salty toothpaste

I saw an infomercial on tv for a tablet that helps to alleviate all bodily odour including bad breath. They showed the cause of bad breath to be food . Western food. They showed a cartoon of steak and a slice of cake going down into the stomach and creating the stink.

So there we have it folks. Cake causes the stink. You know how all those oyajis are always eating cake. If Japanese stoppped eating evil western food and stuck to Japanese staples like miso soup and natto the problem would surely disappear.

Come on now. You know the steady Western diet of cake and steak is the cause. When I moved to Japan, the high price of beef forced me to cut my steak consumption to just one meal a day. It was tough to get used to not having a rare ribeye for breakfast but I persevered. As a result of that and the cessation of flossing, in line with local habits, my breath greatly improved.

I saw an infomercial for some product to help make up for the nutrition deficit caused by low vegetable consumption in Japan. Some expert showed a graph illustrating how Americans consume an average of five times more vegetables in a day than the Japanese. --I can believe it, but it's probably because our fat asses eat five times more of everything-- Anyway, the reaction from the "audience" was classic. This one women said she was, "shocked to see that statistic because I have an image of Americans sitting around eating steak all day." LOL. That's right bitch, but we have a big fat caesar salad on the side!
