I think the katakana for his name are read 'Uncle Tom'.
His [Brendan Behan's] last words were to several nuns standing over his bed, "God bless you, may your sons all be bishops."

It all depends on the context that the "gaijin" word is used. If a girl is straddled atop slapping you and screaming, "Oh, you like that, don't you, you dirty, filthy gaijin! Go home, gaijin...ohhh...go home...deeper into your country, you barbarian savage. You disgrace me...please disgrace me, you pig. Facck you....ohh, yes...yess....yesssssss!", it's perfectly acceptable. I can't imagine Debito having a problem with that, either.

True enough Iraira. In so far as the purpose of the use of the word is to categorize all people as either nihonjin or non-nihonjin with the implication being that being nihonjin is better than being non-nihonjin, it really doesn't matter if they use the term "gaijin," "gaikokujin," or any other term that you prefer.

I, for one, do not feel that the term "gaijin" has enough of a negative conotation all by itself that I find its use outright offensive. In fact, I am more likely to be irritated by someone using the term "gaikokujin" because I find people usually do that when they're making broad sweeping generalizations about all non-Japanese but trying to do it in a way that won't offend people.

I'm with you on that Gil, although Iraira's definition is quite unique and I would like to do further research on that usage in more detail before I comment on that.

Gaijin to me in a normal everyday conversation is quite acceptable. I think it is the context that provides the derogatory meaning and should comments contain that certain context/content, it really doesn't matter if they are using gaikokujin, or gaijin.

When the original arguments about the use of gaijin came out, it was many years back during the time of "social awareness", when the heavy switch to political correctness was occurring in the US and you could not say anything that identified race, gender, or a myriad of other things without being considered socially ignorant and offensive. There was then that element in Japan that tried very hard with some success in carrying this movement into Japan and thus language.

However, I have to say that I have other things to do then sitting around waiting for someone to say something offensive that is not PC, so I can explode and then tell them off. I would rather be researching the problem posed by Iraira....

The average vagina length is several inches longer (deeper) than the average penis length, meaning that in the world there are about 205,000 miles of unused vagina.
