AFP: Japanese researchers envisage nicotine-free tobacco
Japanese researchers have announced they had identified a gene that transports nicotine through tobacco plants, a discovery that could pave the way to cigarettes free of the carcinogen. It was already known that tobacco plants produce nicotine in their roots and carry it to their leaves, but it is the first time in the world that a transporter gene was identified, according to one of the researchers...The finding "raised the possibility of developing a variety of tobacco that does not store nicotine in its leaves," said the team led by professor Kazufumi Yazaki. "This would enable smokers to stem nicotine addiction without using anti-smoking goods," it said, adding it would also be good for nonsmokers if tobacco smoke did not contain nicotine..."I wonder if cigarettes containing little nicotine would sell well. But the gene could also transport compounds that could be used as medicine," he told AFP...more...

Nicotine is NOT carcinogenic!

Postby Nadrew » Thu Jan 22, 2009 6:08 pm

What is with this AFP story? Nicotine is NOT a carcinogen. Nicotine is, unfortunately, HIGHLY addictive...
That is WHY smokeless nicotine products exist. Increasing nicotine in cigarettes might lead lead to less smoking and less cancer.

I'm not sure why you say that about Mulboyne's post. It looks like verbatim clips from the AFP article. I don't think he did any editorializing on his own other than extracting the interesting parts.

That being said, it does look like the AFP screwed up when they mentioned the word 'carcinogen' at the beginning. The theme is dropped for the rest of the story because it doesn't make sense; the new research is about isolating nicotine. Now, if they were researching tobacco-less cigarettes, there would be a cancer-related aspect of this story.

I'll give Mulboyne the benefit of the doubt that it was just a poorly translated Engrish column by AFP. I agree with Newbrew that nicotine is not what causes cancer. Anyone should know that it is the carcinogen in the smoke, like tar and such that causes the cancer.

Then again, I am asking.. WHY? Why would you want to smoke a cigarette without any nicotine? It's like drinking a non-alcoholic beer. That just defeats the whole purpose of smoking a fag.

I could be mistaken, but it's my understanding that not only is nicotine non-carcinogenic, but what does cause cancer is the smoke and chemicals therein, so what's the point, to torture smokers with cigarettes that will leave them unsatisfied no matter how much they smoke, but give them cancer anyway?

Anyway, happa, a popular nicotine-free smoke is already available, ne... 8-)

Smoking is a ritualized behavior, much like heroin addiction. Quitting means avoiding all the behaviors that trigger the withdrawl symtoms. For heroin, that means moving to a new place and avoiding all the "drug buddies". Cigs are more complicated, as there are more triggers, i.e, after a meal, after sex, before bed, at the same time of the day at work (breaktime for me is always around 10:34 am), on the walk to the station (drive to work), etc. Eliminating those are clearly more difficult. So, a cig that lacked the "addictive agent" might be part of the cure.

See, that is part of your ritualized behavior. It all stems from being weened from your mother's nipple too soon, which also explains the copa-cabana-phagaia.

"The carcinogenic properties of nicotine in standalone form, separate from tobacco smoke, have not been evaluated by the IARC, and it has not been assigned to an official carcinogen group. The currently available literature indicates that nicotine, on its own, does not promote the development of cancer in healthy tissue and has no mutagenic properties"
