I like CAPS as it tends to help me focus on whatever point the person is making.
In a nutshell, social Darwinism was/is an attempt to explain anthropology using evolutionary terms. Problem is that there has been no natural state of natural (re: conclusion of Earth Summit 2000), thus, there is no clear outcome for evolution to be directed to. Phenotypic & genotypic correlations that work in one particular environment may be completely broken, reversed, inconsequential in other environments, and trying to ascribe some set direction that any organism is moving in (given the complexity of life history characteristics) is like trying to count the grains of sand on a beach during a tsunami. Ascribing metapopulation evolution to humans is subject to the same flaws as most non-laboratory studies of evolution (and many laboratory studies also), in that too many factors influence temporary outcomes (ala Sewall Wright's adaptive evolutionary landscapes). All we got is a present snapshot, some historical molecular studies, and the dice ready to roll for tomorrow...which is Monday.

The Brailians are supposed to be Nikkei-Brazilians, I thought.
His [Brendan Behan's] last words were to several nuns standing over his bed, "God bless you, may your sons all be bishops."

It doesn't really matter (the Nikkei component, that is). Unlike the Jews - or Koreans for that matter, there is no 'right of return' that allows for easy naturalization. More understandable if you realize most of their ancestors were not wanted in Japan in the first place. Many were burakumin while others were coal miners the government feared would become union members and/or communists due to declining economic conditions. So, they "helpfully" shipped off the riff-raff to Latin America:

Well, you might be right there, but look at the advantages. Why worry about the burakumin problem coming up, when you can lambast the Brazilians. It's a great no-lose proposition!

That smooth-smoothy Aso probably thought he was being uber-subtle when he made that "yotsu" gesture. Imagine: this shoe-polish-haired, greasy, Picasso-faced little intellectually-deficient midget apparently considers himself to be superior to a group of people.

And the J-media abet him in his delusion by calling him a "political thoroughbred."

-catone

-at least the LDP is no longer showing those TV commercials wherein Aso is featured striking bold, charismatic poses (I think he also did Le Tigre and Blue Steel)

Interesting read.
