Well, it's actually a rescue robot used by the Tokyo Fire Department. More here and here.

Here at the Solyent Corporation, we employ the lastest in high tech harvesting methods to ensure the gentle handling of our foodstock materials.

If it wraps them after it bales them, we may now know what was used on that FG floater that showed up off the dock the other day! A great new device for Blinky and crew. I can already see the CMs: "Handle your FG problem yourself! Simple and convenient, a little baling wire and our new technology makes your problems go away. Batteries not included!"

How the hell is that thing supposed to work besides being able to pick up a dead body from a level street? Can it move a body from under 500 million tons of rubble when the "big one" hits? Can it drive up stairs and into buildings? Can it do CPR? Can it even pick up people that aren't wearing shirts or sweaters?

This looks like a really good way for a lot of people to lose their lives when this stupid thing takes 5 hours to unload and ready itself for deployment, only to be fazed by the first door. It's the size of a fucking truck for Buddha's sake!

If I was in their management I'd tell them to get back to fucking work. Spend the taxpayer's money on better training instead of this sorry shit. Firefighting takes guts and will always be the work of people because no situation is the same. The only thing robots are good for in an emergency situation is disarming bombs.

@ Kuang: thanks for the laugh ;)

Great tool if you pass out in the parking lot while drinking. Will the robot take you all the way home and place you gently on your bed so you can sleep it off?
At 1.74m wide and 3.860Kg where do they expect to use it?

Obviously this is intended for incidents like the sarin attack in the subways.

Obviously they didn't think too hard about that.
