borrowed from japan/the west

Postby akatsuka » Mon Feb 02, 2009 8:32 am

i'm trying to think of some things that have obviously taken inspiration from the west, but once arriving in japan have changed their purpose/meaning etc...
for example, words/culture/activites/clothing/customs/food etc... Wasei-eigo/gairaigo could be one example, I'm trying to think of some more.

Vice versa, i also need to think of some things that have obviously taken inspiration from japan, but once arriving in the west have changed their purpose/meaning etc...
i cant think of any here, only that Sudoku is named 'Number place' in Japan, not sudoku...

Its for a University project and its driving me insane! Please help!
To ponder and wonder
About what lies yonder
To think of times so much fonder

Valentine's Day for sure, with women giving gifts to men, giri-choco and White Day and stuff...

What about cosplay? It was imported, then re-exported and maybe now is being re-imported.

French "maison" is just a dwelling place ---> English "mansion" is an expensive house of considerable size or pretension---> Japan "mansion" is a cramped, uninsulated concrete cage

Kiddyland claims credit for introducing Valentine's Day to Japan in 1972 but the firm doesn't get a mention in the Japanese wiki entry. Instead, it says that Morozoff produced the first valentine chocolates back in the thirties, while Isetan had an unsuccessful attempt to promote the day in 1958. However, the entry also says that Sony founder Akio Morita popularized the day from 1968 and used to claim credit for creating Japan's Valentine's Day.

Going to take credit for popularizing Valentines day

Postby cot faulking » Mon Feb 02, 2009 12:46 pm

Valentines might have been introduced way back when by who knows who. We know why, like Christmas, stores wanted to sell more goods. Those people that may or may not have introduced Valentines day are old. Wouldn't want to be caught kissing them.

So it's our job to popularize Valentine's Day in Japan. So the j girls have something worthwhile to kiss.

How about the baseball term 'timely hit' changing for a opportune hit to the Japanese a hit at any time. Example -the The Yokohama Bay Stars are down 7-0 in the bottom of the ninth with two out and no one on and the batter bloops out a timely hit.

A little bit out of date perhaps, but on the importing side, there's the midget submarine (or even those dinky little cars so popular here that don't appear to be sold anywhere else).
For exports, what about the martial arts, with people like, say, Steven Seagal, pretending to be samurai, where all the true bushido would want to do to a foreigner is lop their head off?
