Crows are protected in Australia...

Postby GomiGirl » Tue May 20, 2003 3:53 pm

I remember a guy who was fined for taking out his air-gun and shooting a crow.. they are protected in Australia.

Stupid Laws

shooting a crow in Queensland now fetches a fine of "wait for it" $225,000 and/or two years in jail.

To be totally cynical, in this absolutely politically correct world of ours, I guess in one's defence one could say, "Well, I was just shooting at my neighbour and the crow got in the way," and then you might get off with a lesser sentence of just trying to kill a person.

Is this where Gov Blinky got the idea?

West Nile Virus found in dead bird from White House lawn

"There have been a couple of previous instances," Jim Mackin, a Secret Service spokesman, told CNN, recalling at least one previous case where a bird infected with the virus was found dead inside the White House grounds.

Asked if the Secret Service had any reason to believe anyone intentionally sent a bird infected with the virus to the White House grounds as a terrorist act, the spokesman said, "There is no indication (this) is anything more than the birds dying ... and dying on the White House grounds."

Mackin said the agency was treating this as a public safety issue as opposed to anything directed at the White House.

Interesting side effect...

The West Nile Virus has killed 16 people in the United States since 1999, according to Keller, who added that most of those individuals' immune systems were already compromised by other diseases such as cancer.

Tokyo's Crows: You do the math

Postby Taro Toporific » Sat Jun 28, 2003 11:35 pm

ImageCrows 'Invading' Japan
VOA Tokyo
26 Jun 2003, 07:50 UTC

Japan's crows have become an urban plague, harassing city dwellers. They squawk continuously at dawn, waking up sleeping neighbors. They peck holes in garbage sacks and toss trash onto normally tidy city streets. And the big, jet-black birds have been known to attack people. Japan's Wild Bird Society estimates that about 130,000 crows live in the country, a third of them in Tokyo....So far, Tokyo has spent about $8 million to deal with the crows.

You do the math 'cause something seems real wacko here . . .
1/3 of Japan's 130,000 crows = 43,333 Tokyo crows, and divide that by $8,000,000 = $184.62 per crow. . . but that can't be right, could it?

Let me shoot them for them. I only ask 100$ per head. That will save the government and tax-payers hundreds of millions of yen. I am a philanthropist. :)

Reminds me of the nutria bounties offered in the U.S. Southwest. Current bounties are about US$5 per nutria. Of course since guns are prohibited, you'll have to get proficient with either bows (ala Legolas in LOTR) or slingshots (ala Usoppu in One Piece).

Shotguns aren't illegal if you have the proper permits. I bet birdshot would do just fine... although you'd need someone to flush the crows out of their trees and into flight so you could get a clean shot. ;)

The best method I have for dealing with crows is to ignore them.

Other than ripping up improperly covered garbage, they don't do that must harm.

No shinto!

I'm beginning to believe there is no "shimple" in Japanese.

Ever try installing both English and Japanese versions of the same software? 1 click in English = 4 in Japanese.. Of course, my limited Kanji doesn't help.. But for some reason, I can usually figure out the process BEFORE my Japanese friend.. Maybe it's because I CAN'T understand the unnecessary pixel abuse.

My crow story in a nutshell: Crows would gather in a large tree across the street at around 4am every morning, making unnerving racked. Since there was an open plot with the large tree, I tried chucking rocks at the bastards, but couldn't get enough distance and was worried of hitting my window; I'd collect the rocks the night before.

Ordered a wrist rocket from the States for 12 bucks online, with 100s of ballbearings.. Actually, I still have it. Anyone want it? I don't need it anymore. Here's why:

Crows are smart birds, so I used my bird-brain power to think like a crow; dangerous area = stay away; and spread the word it's a bad neighborhood to protect my friends... Like Kabukicho..

I woke up at 3:45 every morning for two weeks and peppered the area with ballbearings. I only hit three, and for some reason, it didn't seem to really hurt them; it just ricocheted. BUT, it annoyed the shit out of them and they found a new place to perch. No crows for 3 years now!

See how smart I am? 8O

Of course it's not right! Without this extremely effective crow management program, the current Tokyo crow population would have exploded to nearly 1 million. So actually they've only spent $8 for every crow that never was.

That's dividing all the money spent so far (for years?) by the number of LIVING crows. What about the ones that have died/ been killed? Or maybe they're keeping them alive. Crows can live 10 or 20 years . . . That would get expensive. :?

Postby GargoyleTS » Mon Jun 30, 2003 5:46 pm

Rob Pongi has finally discovered (albeit accidentally) a way to finally make use of these damned AOHell CD's I get every friggin week!! Scare crows! I love it! ( i know I am using a lot of !'s but it too cool an idea!)

Maybe we can get the Japanese Gov't to buy all the CD's from these guys to distribute to people for the anti-crow mobiles.

I don't think AOL/TW would like the implication that their annoyance of the public is useful only for scaring away wildlife. Or maybe those bastards would.

Ok, HHGTTG logic here.

Maybe we can convice all the crows to retire and then they'd be EX crows.

Then there would be no more crow problem.

In other news, there is an ex-crow problem in Tokyo.

City eats crow as professor caws over his spicy sack
(Mainichi)By the FG's own Marvin Feltcher , Staff Writer July 7, 2003
...Spicy-tasting garbage bags are the latest weapon to be deployed in the fight to keep crows from scattering trash everywhere. ... finally produced a commercially viable spicy trash bag, though at 49 yen each for a 45-liter bag, it's still four times the price of a normal trash bag. He adds that using a trashcan with a lid is the most effective way to combat crows

Clever Crows

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Feb 24, 2005 10:11 pm

Image
Crows are among the most innovative feeders, a study finds. Here a crow in Tokyo drinks water from pelican-shaped fountain. (AP Graphics)
ABC: Among Bird Brains, Crows Are Most Clever, Survey Finds
Louis Lefebvre has come up with an IQ test for birds that has allowed him to create a pecking order in mental abilities among our fine feathered friends...So for the record, the smartest bird in the world isn't your expensive parrot that has learned how to repeat your private comments at the most inopportune time. It's just the common crow. That won't surprise bird lovers who have long marvelled at the cleverness of this member of the corvidae family. There are many celebrated cases of innovativeness among crows, which are known to manufacture tools to accomplish varied tasks. Perhaps the most famous is the Japanese carrion crow that is clearly over the top when it comes to bird IQ. These crows routinely perch at traffic intersections near a university campus in Japan and wait for a red light.
