Would the last FG leaving Tokyo turn out the lights?

Postby Bucky » Thu Feb 19, 2009 10:55 am

Found this assessment of the Gaijin community:

Next, talking of meltdowns, the problems in the international
banking sector is obviously hitting the Tokyo expat
community hard. Although there are no statistics, it is not
difficult to see evidence of the escalating departure of
foreigners as the recession (or is it already a depression?)
gathers pace. Restaurants serving expats are more than
half empty on Friday nights, Roppongi streets are less
crowded, and bars and entertainment establishments are
offering generous incentives to get people in.

Other evidence of the emptying of Tokyo's expats can be found
at the various foreign business and social clubs. Most
clubs have had unprecedented decreases in membership and
one particular major foreign social club is said to have
lost hundreds of members, about 2.5% of its membership, in
a single month at the end of 2008 alone.

Fantastic! Less competition for Japanese bunny-girls.

BANK CRISIS! If the major banks continue at this greed fueled rate, there will only be two banks left. The SPERM BANK and the BLOOD BANK.
And still run by BLOODY WANKERS!!

Good riddance. The bankers and brokers always seemed to live down to the worst examples of 'ugly American', regardless of where they were from.

F'in tourists, the lot of them.

Can't say I'm happy about the economy, but this is definitely a silver lining.

Fat bonus deals return to bite new owner of failed Lehman

Postby james » Sat Mar 28, 2009 3:35 pm

HONG KONG -- Things are getting tense at Japanese brokerage Nomura Holdings.

As Japan's annual banker bonus season nears, there are expectations that many of the 8,000 or so Lehman staff inherited in a bold acquisition of the failed Wall Street broker late last year may walk or be axed...

Interesting.
There's so many hostess bars in Gion it's always been something of a puzzle to me how they all manage to stay in business.
Not unlike all the taxi drivers.

nottu wrote:I see the entertainment scene as a type of trailing economic indicator. As such, I have to visit some of these establishments from time to time to assess the state of the economy. Sometimes it requires lengthy interviews.

Absolutely. Lengthy interviews are the best.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.
