For those of you Old Timers who remember back in the second year of Meiji, FEN had the notorius "A Rittle bit of Ranguage goes a Rong Way" Show, featuring Dan and Hiroko. Dan was none other than Daniel Coughlin Senior, father of the heavenly Daniel. Dan Sr., was an FEN Staff member, who after discharge, went on to become a pronouncer for TBS News and most lately NHK. He also claims to be a lurker on FG, but I doubt that seriously, because he never learned to read and worst yet, doesn't buy drinks.....

A blast from the past!!

"A Riddle Ranguage Goes a Wrong Way" ... I remember it well. I even met Hiroko and several other "luminaries" from the business a few times. I'm not sure how much the show actually contributed to the advancement of language learning by US servicemen though.

People who remember that one will probably also remember another FEN hit: Chicken Man! (Baaaak-baaaak-baaaak-baaaaak ... He's Everywhere! He's Everywhere!).

Anyway, so the angelic busker is Dan's kid eh? Interesting.

Hiroko Kubota made a pretty good business selling English language tapes (that's like cassettes to those who don't know). Almost every book store and department store had copies for sale during the 60-70's. It would appear that a large amount of them were recorded at and by FEN, which makes it a no-no to sell them (US Government property) commercially. That might have accounted for her rather abrupt departure from FEN. It was like she was there one day and gone the next....

That sounds about right. It would have been sometime in the early 70's when my path briefly crossed hers. All I really remember about her is that she was a flashy dresser and her English was ... um ... sorta OK.

But gosh Greji, now you've gone and dated yourself, and I don't mean you went out on a date with yourself. I thought I was an old timer (first landed in '67) but somehow now I suspect you're a true FG: that's "Fossil Gaijin".

What kept you? We wanted to welcome you to Japan, but Cranky and I were downtown in a cabaret surrounded by a thousand thirsty hostesses and couldn't get away!

And now I know that Chicken Man was played by Dick Orkin!!

Damn, it's been an educational day!
