Were lobsters ever considered endangered in any way to give them the protection status?

No - with the exception maybe of spiny lobsters in the Caribbean.
However, PETA is not about protecting endangered species - they are fanatics about protecting the lives of any non-human living creatures ... except if they happen to be particularly unattractive like cockroaches and most arachnids. Charlotte's Web anyone?
