I guess that's better than being impregnated with the wrong sperm.

You know, the sad thing is that the doctors could have kept their mouth shut about this whole incident and gotten away. The parents would have been left to believe that the child was theirs and never would have suspected it came from another egg.

Only a girl in her 20s would get an abortion over a POSSIBLE mix-up... it's not like it would be coming out of someone else's privates. Why is a girl in her 20's getting in virto anyway? (unless she's a lesbian or has a dead husband or something)

On another note, apparently somewhere around 1 in 25 men aren't the fathers of the children they think are theirs (and are footing the bill to raise).

I disagree--for Japan, I'd say that's pretty impressive. Normally, we'd be hearing that the hospital screwed up when the child was in her mid-teens.

The truly sad thing is that in vitro fertilization is only successful roughly 35% of the time.

And considering the expense of each attempt, I hope the woman wins her law suit.

I was wondering about that. I got one kid that looks just like the mailman, but my wife says she couldn't have got pregnant from a blowjob, so I guess it's alright!

What a stupid assumption. Fertility issues aren't always related to age but more likely circumstance.

Saw the report on the news last night. Both 'properly labeled' petri dishes were put on the same table. I guess the common procedure, though, is to label lids only. Someone put the wrong lid on the wrong base..

On the news, the mistake seemed to be attributed to a staff member 'working alone'; 'Working alone is dangerous.'.. Someone needs to reevaluate the processes at that hospital, because my piss is handled better at the annual checkups.

I also find it sad the woman assumed the only option was to have an abortion..

Perhaps she didn't assume it was the ONLY option, but decided it was the BEST option for her. Isn't that the argument behind legalized abortions--an abortion should be a legal, viable option without any social stigma attached to it?

Of course GJ, maybe deep down you're really just a social conservative ;)

I'm not about to delve into the abortion issue, but TIJ - the only 'social stigma' attached, in this case, would be from surrogate motherhood]both[/I] would merit funds. But again; TIJ. No money, no adoption. Just hospital staff 'dangerously' working alone with petri dishes. :p

I still think it's strange for someone to give up on natural conception before they even hit 30.

What's the problem? They wanted a kid they got one. In defence of the J-doctors at least they were smart enough to use the right species - humans

Behan wrote:Mulboyne, or other FG members with good Japanese skills will probably be able to explain this better than me, but it looks like the doctor who impregnated the woman with the wrong egg could be guilty of not following proper procedures in other cases. The article says that in 30% of 83 cases (25 cases or so?) proper procedures were not followed.

No, she's a bitch whore. I underdtand there are situations where abortion is the best option, but ending a potential life because of a DNA mix up is just fucked.

Anyway, if you can have kids, adopt.
