Dementia = Japanese

Long hours link to dementia risk
The BBC News -- Feb. 26, 2009
Long working hours may raise the risk of mental decline and possibly dementia, research suggests.
The Finnish-led study was based on analysis of 2,214 middle-aged British civil servants.
It found that those working more than 55 hours a week had poorer mental skills than those who worked a standard working week...more...

British civil servants
What I want to know is whether the kind of work you do is stimulating and exciting as opposed to boring and mundane makes any difference at all?

Yes, that would also be very relevant for them to study. I do wonder however if there is such a thing as a stimulating and exciting job that has long work hours....

While there are clearly a few exceptions, I think the vast majority of jobs that fall into the category of "civil servant" also fall into the category of "boring and mundane".

And then there is the factor "retirement", something else civil servants are famous for... I do believe there is some merit in staying active after you stop working fulltime, I mean both ms. Tsuru's grandparents are 90+ but still out and about, playing sports and working in the family farm, and they don't seem to get any older every time I see them let alone demented. My folks on the other hand have retired from a factory job and being a housewife, live in a town and even though they are younger all they do is go to the shops, go to the church and go on holiday, and yet they do age considerably faster with all sorts of physical and mental ailments even when you correct for the TIJ factor on the part of her folks.

An interesting subject nonetheless.

If Ms. Tsuru's folks get to 95, they basically are clear of developing Alzheimer's & Parkinsons. The age-specific chance of death actually decreases after about 100, suggesting that the drift-driven accumulation of late-acting deleterious alleles that cause aging seems to be restricted to older age classes and not extremely old age classes (also true for dogs, cats, flies and refrigerators...see work by Curtsinger and Carey, and Rose, Mueller, etc., if you are an insomniac). After 95 or so, you've run through the minefield of deleterious alleles that will off 99.999% of any population, leaving you to genetically coast free of new genetically-inspired signs of aging.

For Tsuru:

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Mainichi: Japanese less satisfied with life compared to Dutch
Japanese people are likely to be much less satisfied with their daily lives and jobs than the Dutch, a survey by a Japanese health drink manufacturer has found...Asked about the level of their satisfaction with their overall daily lives, about 72 percent of Japanese said they were very satisfied or satisfied, compared to 96 percent of the Dutch. The ratio of those who were fulfilled with their jobs was some 60 percent in Japan, but reached around 85 percent in the Netherlands. In response to a question about their family lives, about 49 percent of the Dutch said they were very satisfied, while only 12 percent of Japanese agreed...more...

It's why we live where we do isn't it? ;)

Iraira: that's actually very interesting... this means people have more incommon with cars than I previously thought: most of them will conk out after 250-300kkm, but if it goes over that without too much trouble it'll do 400kkm just as easily :p
