Schultz, most of the time when people announce they've developed their own set of educational materials for learning Japanese, I roll my eyes, and then I roll them even harder after seeing the material. 99% of the time they really suck, and it reminds me of why the professional linguists and educators that publish books or teach classes get paid to do so.

But your new page kicks ass. I have to say I was surprised. First of all, the sheer volume of material is impressive. But I really like the way you organized the material. The mnemonics are really stupid, but in a good way. They're funny and memorable. I actually think they're much better than the ones in Henshall which never did anything for me. I also appreciate the order of the kanji. You've grouped together characters that share elements (radicals or otherwise), and I think that really helps create mental connections. When I study a kanji, I often find myself jotting down other kanji with similar parts to make sure I remember the similarities and differences.

I guess everybody learns kanji in different ways, but your page pretty closely matches the way I've always organized & thought about kanji. Maybe that's embarrassing to say :-) But anyway, I like it. I am sure the accuracy is not 100%, but I think it's still a great study guide that works in conjunction with a more anal-retentive dictionary or kanji reference. Keep up the good work.

I'd just suggest you break it down into smaller pages and index it somehow.

Very cool. I just recently decided to get serious about kanji, so this is great timing. Thank you for your effort.

This sold me:

...you can't teach Japanese like you'd teach German. You can't teach kanji without radicals. You can't teach synonyms by giving them all the same English definition. You can't teach verbs without including the damn prepositions! Next time you, the reader, are going batshit about how arbitrary or complex Japanese is, take time and think that maybe the textbook is making it complex.

Tokyodamage, I just want to chime in with Omaemona and Adhesive and say that your dictionary is great! I'll be using it a lot!

nottu: I wish someone would teach ME to be an 'effective gaijin'!

case in point: I was leaving to go on vacation and had a bunch of stuff in the fridge - I didn't want to throw it out, so I tried to give it so a local homeless guy that lives under the overpass, paints his toenails, and collects cigarette butts. Not only did he refuse my food, but I got pulled over by the cops for having a 'loud squeaky bicycle'!

taro, adhesive, behan: thanks for the support! If you know anyone that is starting kanji, please tell 'em!

omae mona: yeah, I agree that the page needs to be smaller. Problem is, I'm a writer, not a programmer, and no money to hire one! I have been told I need to 'put all the information into a database' so that I can plop the database into whatever format I want (html, books, flashcards, etc.) but when I asked the guy which database software I should use, he said he didn't know.

Also, who is Henshall???

Nottu - For those who want to spend time learning the language, it's extremely limiting to do so while avoiding kanji, which basically means avoiding any written material.

What the heck do you mean by "effective gaijin"? I would feel less effective if I couldn't read the terms on my lease to discuss them with my landlord, or couldn't read the menu at the restaurant I went to for lunch, or couldn't read the newspaper. Do you live in Japan? I'd be fascinated to hear what kind of lifestyle you lead where you haven't at least wished you could read the words surrounding you.

You can just use Excel. Here is a sample file I created to give you an example: http://www.filesavr.com/kanjidatabase

I was planning on making a database for convenience sake, but I don't know how long it will take me. If I get a hair up my ass and decide to compulsively finish it anytime soon, I;ll send you the file. You may want to just assign a set of kanji to a bunch of volunteers who can enter the data on their free time.

I agree with you there!
I know less of everything now than I knew then. Maybe that's the 'benefit' of age/altzheimers.:crazy3:

I remember the time before I learned to write in Japanese I used to carry a small note book around with me, and whenever I heard a new word or phrase, I'd jot it down in romaji for future reference.
Often people would ask what I was doing and take a look at my scribbles. I got so fed up with the responses.
Girls would usually say something like, "Ah! romaji...Kawaii wa ne!! " which wasn't so bad, but the condescending, typical superior, "Romaji da! Yappari gaijin da naa!!" that I got from most guys, made me decide that as long as I'm living with these people I suppose I'd better learn to write like them.
You know, the funny thing is though; have you ever watched most Japanese people use a keyboard........??
Hardly no one uses the kana input........they all type in romaji!!!
It seems I was right all along.

@ omae mona: I think I saw the Henshall book, actually! His mnemonics are all mechakucha - one minute he's talking about the 1,000-year-old roots of some radical and the next he's like "and THAT one looks like a bunny!" and I was all "what? dude, you been studying so long you lost your mind. Take a deep breath."

@ adhesive - Thanks for offering to do a database (or part of one) believe it or not, i don't have excel installed on this machine, but i'll take your example file today to another PC that HAS excel and check it out!

@ nottu, iraira, cranky bastard: I think I'd have an easier time learning kanji if I gave half a shit about manga or pop, but mostly the things i WANT to read in japanese are kind of hard (true crime / yakuza-uyoku conspiracy theories / ura-nippon stuff) and I don't have the patience to read a bunch of boring, simple stuff and gradually work my way up to the hard stuff.
