
Internal affairs minister Kunio Hatoyama has dealt another blow to Japan Post's plans to stabilize its operations through real estate deals by opposing the redevelopment of the historic Tokyo Central Post Office building. Japan Post canceled its contract to sell Kanpo no Yado accommodation and recreation facilities to Orix Real Estate Corp. in February following Hatoyama's objection. Japan Post officials now fear the company may have to review plans to build a 38-story tower on the post office site. Hatoyama likened the historic concrete building to the crested ibis, a rare bird with iconic significance to Japan.
