Man.. it was such bullcrap. I was watching the free game at Bicamera Yokohama when the place got so shitpacked with people that the damned store had to kick all of us out during the top of 9th inning. Such douche bags. The game was pretty much over at that point, but I had to miss the ending and the celebration. I saw Oh getting the group toss in the highlights. Sweet win but the win doesn't feel so good for the way they won.

Flat as a tire. Japan wins it 10-6. Stand by for the media on-slaught! Sekai no Nippon!

I'm turning off the TV for two weeks!

Yeah no shit. Nippon is so heiwa that the media pretty much ejaculates all over themselves in events like this.. especially with that Arakawa chick in the Olympics.

Sometimes, I feel that Japan needs its own 911 caliber catastrophe to have its reality check.

For taking out your money, and they close so damn early. Who has ever had the problem of trying to get money after 9:00 pm. Half the damn machines are shut down. And don't try to get money on a national holiday. AO you've been out of Japan too long my man.

I NEVER got charged to take out money from my bank last time I used a J-ATM (6 years ago).

I also have a habit of keeping money on me so it was never a big problem.

Also too, if I went to the ATM, I used my bank book instead of my card usually.

A much better game this time; K up 1 to 0, bottom of the 5th..

Some mighty close plays on the bases, all going Japan's way.. Of course, a decent reply only happens when Ichiro fouls off a pitch.

I guess he pitched 4 days ago on the 5th, but won't have a chance again until the 15th.. Probably good to keep him loose.

Underdog games

Postby BO-SENSEI » Tue Mar 10, 2009 9:57 am

So far there have been some amazing upsets, not in the asia pool mind you, it played out like clock work, but with netherlands over dominican republic, even beating Puerto Rico as we speak. Australia is even dominated Mexico, and even Italy is a lot better than everyone has thought. It seems like every team has improved since the last WBC, everyone except China and Chinese Taipei, but then again against Baseball powerhouses like Japan and Korea, they did not stand a chance.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

This was talked about before, I think, but is Japan even fielding its best team?
Wouldn't someone like (Olympic team member) Satozaki be better than Johjima? And wasn't Fukudome less than stellar in Chicago?
Iwamura is a good player, especially in Tampa, but it seems like there would be a lot of other good infielders in Japan. Maybe his MLB experience will help a lot playing foreign teams.
Media favorites aren't necessarily the best players. But it is interesting that Hara didn't just pick a lot of Giants, at least I think so anyway.

Upsets indeed, but I not sure amazing fits all. The Netherlands and Italy are usually the European champions, with the Dutch in the majority. If you remember the last WBC, the Netherlands opened with a no-hitter by a very young (less than 20?) pitcher. There are a lot of major league players from the Netherlands. Australia also and the Aussies are missing their 100mph pitcher from the Devil Rays who is not playing. Also, Hanshin's former ace closer (before Fujikawa) and now set-up man is not on the Aussie team.

Most of Taiwan's MLB players are not participating, probably from contact worries from their the home teams with the balance coming from the Taiwan Pro League. China and South Africa are the only real weak links in the chain, but as you say even they were better than in the last series.

Netherlands knocks out Dominican Republic, did anyone see that coming? Australia beating Cuba, maybe that will make front page news.

We've been discussing that over on the Dead Ball thread. Possibly better posted here. But, as to your Netherlands comment, the Netherlands is getting run down a lot, especially by the J-media, but they've got a good team. They have 11 MLB ball players and the top team in Europe. They beat the Dominicans the first game, so this isn't much more of a surprise.

The Aussies are always tough, especially in the big tourneys. They are currently coming to bat in the bottom of the 9th, down 5-4.

Not bad. J-boys up 2-1 on the top of the 2nd inning and Japan is taking advantage of SK Chons' errors.

Samurai Japan is up 2-1 to Korea in the third. Japan just pulled starter Utsumi.

I think what is interesting is that since the stadium (Petco) is damn near empty both oendan sections are packed around home plate. This would never happen in Japan, where they'd still be cheering from way out in the outfield.

Too bad they're playing these games in pretty weak baseball areas; Sand Diego and Florida.. I'm sure weather was the deciding factor.

Does this game really matter that much? They're both advancing.. Seems like one team would be tempted to give up 10 runs in the 1st to save their players for a game that mattered..

I'm just watching the ESPN coverage and the commentary team are wondering which pitcher Japan should use against the US if they hold on to win against Korea. One guy argues for Darvish because he thinks the US line-up is too familiar with Matsuzaka. Another says it ought to be Matsuzaka because he has the right attitude to beat team of MLB players. Any thoughts?
