This Kelly Yancey cat is fucking paranoid delusional. I guarantee people aren't saying "go home" and "die" or spitting when he walks by on a regular basis. I've experience some racist shit here including being assaulted because someone thought I was Russian but his claims are ridiculous.

i think i agree about his being paranoid. funny you should mention that about russians. i was at a convenience store a couple weeks ago, about 2 a.m. on my way home when this old drunk guy came up to me and my friend. it seemed he was looking for confrontation, as he was asking us questions and then asking if we were russian etc and would not get off that topic. all the while, the staff came out from behind the counter as they saw that it might escalate.

they seemed thankful though that i just diffused the situation and we left. there is definitely a deep-seated, unabashed hatred for russians here, and i genuinely feel sorry the many law-abiding russians here that likely have to deal with this shit on a near-daily basis. i'm wondering too if half-russian kids have a harder go at things here than other mixed children.

He may not be paranoid.
When I visited Japan last autumn I experienced some hostility, including nearby spitting, even if most Japanese were rather indifferent to me.
It feels like the attitude are worsened since I was there last time 5 years ago. Maybe it's me but people seems more aggressive nowadays.

One older guy even expressed verbal displeasure about our existence there.
I sat quietely beside him when two German guys, whom I know shlightly, along with a Japanese female friend appeared in the same room.
The Japanese middle aged guy muttered something in english: More of these damn foreigners!
Maybe I should have made him see the errors of his ways, because the bastard said it in my presence, but I was leaving Japan the very next day anyway so I let it pass that time.

OK! It's their country but what's the point in harrassing perfectly normal people like those Germans.

I continue to be puzzled by the vastly different experiences reported by different individuals. We hear about foreigners living in Japan for 20 years without experiencing this kind of hostility, and we hear about other foreigners visiting Japan for their first time and experiencing it daily. I don't get it.

Maybe it's the location. Or is it the particular appearance of each foreigner? Or their behavior? Or is it (as some people have suggested here) just a matter of differing perception on the part of the foreigner? It seems like the differing experiences are too extreme to be explained by luck.

I've never had trouble, either in major cities or out in the countryside. I'm starting to wonder if I'm just too spaced out to notice the spitting and cursing that my presence inspires. I do notice it when my wife does it, though.

I am not implying that I am the most popular guy in the world but it is weird that it's just in Japan(Tokyo) I got those responses and only on the last visit.

Oh well, it's their country and maybe it's a sound reaction to some irregularity in Japan's relations to the foreign element or something(which in a way would make Takechanpoo right).

It's not a big issue for me as a tourist.

That's popular, but it's more like the "anybody but we Japanese caused our economic collapse" theory.

Fucktards like Debito and the moronic jellyfish that listen to his crap miss the whole point about being reminded by J-leaguers that you aint a real or permanent member of society here.

You see, the line I usually adopt in such situations is to agree with them. Kinda like this:

J-leaguer: We dont need immigrants in Japan. They are dangerous and scary, and disrupt the wa. Its only a matter of time before the whole country goes to shit.

KJ: Yeah, you're absolutely right. And I gotta tell ya, if and when things do go pear-shaped, I'm outta here. Like a bird. To safety. Sorry I cant take you with me. Good luck with your collapsed nenkin system, inaka ghost-towns, fucked economy, overcrowded, under-resourced health care system, negative birth rate, etc... I'll send you a postcard, but I doubt there will be anyone able to deliver it.:)

I don't pay attention either - I am usually on my phone or reading a book. I think I was a bit more sensitive and was "thinking" that everybody was looking at me whether they were or not.

That said, I was walking around Nishi-Shinjuku a month or so ago and I lit a cigatette on the street and some nosey woman walking along told me to put out my cigarette and I was in a cranky mood and I told her to mind her own business as I wasn't hurting anybody (in japanese) and then she said to me that I was bad and I should go back to my own country. But if I wasn't foreign she would have found some other reason to berate me as she seemed the type to enjoy telling everybody else their business.

Better yet, tell them, "I'll let you in on a little secret. All of us, in the US knew this was going to happen, and many of us sold our stocks and holdings at least a year or so ago, made a mint. Don't believe the news coming from America regarding the economic crisis. Stock prices are down, but everyone is flush with cash from selling their shares at the peak. This was just a ploy to make all Americans richer at the expense of the rest of the world. Once everyone else is bankrupt, we'll buy up everything. Tell anyone, and I'll deny it. Best of luck to you."

From the Shinjuku-ku government pages, it looks to me like Shinjuku has officially adopted a no outdoor smoking policy. However, it's one of those "suggestion" policies. They've posted signs, but there are no penalties for non-compliance except they've occasionally deployed organized batallions of volunteers to complain to smokers. I bet you were about the 200th person in "violation" that lady saw that day, and she just got cranky and went off on your foreign-ness.

I hate policies like this. If the government wants to prevent smoking, they should debate the rule on its merits, attempt to pass it as a proper law, and enforce it consistently, with law enforcement officers, rather than just enabling some special interest group to go bully people they don't like (e.g. sexy Australian women who are taking all the good local men).

It wasn't on one of the packed streets around the station - I think that it is sensible not to smoke while walking around there plus they have tons of smoking areas (which smell awful and worse than a single person walking but that is another topic)

I was walking down a basically empty street near the Tocho area on a sunday night. There were no signs on the footpath etc. It was just this annoying woman looking for somebody - anybody - to have a go at.

Happened once in 11 years - some old drunk bloke on a train in Tokyo (first train back to Utsunomiya and pretty wasted) started having a go at my husband for being with a foreigner. Bit of a mistake as my hubby worked for the yakusa and had a v v short fuse...

But out in the sticks of Tochigi, everyone knew me and were super friendly...

Wow six pages on this subject in three days!
Dislike of outsiders by the locals, probably fits most societies that I've come into contact with. Though I might add that I've seen less prejudice in this country than in many others I've visited.

I was once confronted by a guy on a train in Tokyo who came up to me and said, "Gaijin wa dai kirai." (I really hate foreigners)
I shouted at him, "Omae no kimochi yooooohku wakaru yo." (I reaaaaly know what you mean)

It happens everywhere. People are the same all over the place.
Just because the Japanese have the audacity to behave that way toward outsiders too, doesn't upset me in the least.:p

The number of 'tolerate' countries in need of English "edutainers" (Eigo whores if that helps Take) is surely decreasing, but the fact that Japan (as the worlds second largest economy) still needs (or at least THINKS they need) them speaks volumes about the locals and their education system now, doesn't it?
