I thought you buy one, have your family back wherever you came install it, and then connect from Japan to the TV brick server via your PC.

U sure you need two?
In order to watch Home TV channels from abroad, a TVBrick Home Server appliance must be installed at your Home in your home country and connected to the broadband Internet access of your home family. It becomes then possible to watch all Home TV channels from abroad by connecting to your home TVBrick either with a standard PC or with the optional TVBrick player. A password will be required to connect to your home TVBrick in order to make sure that only people of the same family can access Home TV channels. Because reproduction of home TV channels happens in a private manner within the same family, the use of TVBrick to watch home TV channels is compatible with international Copyright Law.

TVBrick provides a sub-VHS quality image

Nope---I guess I was reacting to the tvbrick.jpg picture that Steve posted.

I went back and reread the documentation last night. I saw that optional TVBrick player wasn't necessary since my big screen TV is not very useful because: "TVBrick is now tuned to provide a sub-VHS quality image at 9 frames per second."
Now I have to figure out how it handles the cable tuner or as I suspect the TVBrick just mirror relays the TV feed of Love Connection--RAWthat my nephews watch 24/7. :?

Already obsolete.

I wonder why anyone would want to buy this product. If you need a fat pipe to watch the TV broadcast content, a google for bittorrent or usenet could bring you all the content you want in higher quality too.

The standard broadband speed in Japan such as 3,138yen/m Yahoo BB is at least 8MBS...plenty of bandwidth.

The TVBrick idea here is that they want too sell TVBricks to Japanese exiled to Europe. They're pitching the idea that a Japanese family in Tokyo installs a TVBrick and the hubby in exiled to Euroland can watch all the Japanese TV he wants in REALTIME. TVBrick is refusing all sales to the US, UK, etc. The bittorrent or usenet route involves a lot fuss, whereas TVBrick is a LEGAL, no-brainer option.

The Register has a better write-up than the TVBrick's own webstite.

I hate to crack the bubble here, but I have figured out how to stream live TV over the net, without any special hardware whatsoever.

All you need is a phat Internet connection above 1mbit/sec upload, a TV capture card, and Windows Media Encoder 9.
:D It's that simple.

I let my folks watch Japanese TV for the first time a couple months ago.
:D

The only thing I couldn't figure out how to do was to let the user change the channel. I am sure it was an oversight or just lack of experience with WME0 9.0 :D

And there is no service fee, no brick to buy, no upgrade fees, just a 4000-10000 yen capture card, a PC, and an internet connection.
