
In an age when electronic communication is pushing the humble postcard toward obsolescence, a group of amateur map makers is using the Internet to make it easier to locate postboxes and send mail the old-fashioned way. Outdoing even Japan Post Holdings Co., the loose coalition of Internet users has mapped the location of thousands of postboxes across the nation. The Postmap, the brainchild of Takeshi Kuwamura, a 36-year-old company employee from Tokyo's Setagaya Ward, lists the location of about 113,000 postboxes in Japan's 47 prefectures as of the end of February...The work is being undertaken by volunteers who apparently either find gratification in trailblazing an otherwise uncharted area, or joy in taking part in a "treasure hunt" that spans the archipelago..."The beauty of all of this is that total strangers are cooperating together.
