Foreigners Are All Over Judo Like A Rash

Asahi: Fungal risk in contact sports
Those who practice judo and other contact sports are at risk of contracting a fungal skin infection that is believed to have originated in South America and was unknown in this country until a few years ago, doctors say. Trichophyton tonsurans infection, like athlete's foot, causes itches and rashes but mainly on the scalp, face and neck and upper parts of the body. In serious cases, it can lead to hair loss. A recent survey found that three in 10 judo groups have come across incidences of T. tonsurans among their members, according to a team of Juntendo University dermatologists...Cases of infection began turning up in Japan around 2001. The cases first involved judoists and wrestlers who had taken part in international competitions...In recent years, cases of infection have been reported among family members and friends of infected athletes...To prevent infection, athletes are advised to wash their training clothes frequently, take a shower or bath after practice and help to keep gyms clean

There's the fucking key. I've trained in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in six dojos in the US, Japan, and Brazil and the Japanese are the WORST I've experienced when it comes to keeping their gis clean. I've sparred with guys who could make you tap out just from the smell of their gear. Fucking disgusting.

Didn't you know the Japanese sweat less than foreigners? As a result, it's not necessary to waste resources washing as much as filthy outsiders. Mottainai! Don't you understand the unique Japanese way of "eco"?

On a more serious note, a friend and colleague was just asked to give up his sports club membership because "he sweats too much".

From what I have seen in 7 years of kakuto training in japan is that the preferred method of cleaning your gi here is to simply take it off immediately after training and hang it up to air dry. This makes for some really nasty gi's. I am always told it make them last longer. I wash mine every day in cold water, but then air dry it, and they last just as long, probably longer.

Exactly. They just hang them up and keep wearing them again and again. It's really nasty.

Ahh, what's a little funk when you're having fun. No worse than being down wind from Noriko...

They need to find a way to compete somehow and unlike drugs or brass knuckles, I'm pretty sure funk hasn't been banned just yet :D

Yeah man. Dojo etiquette seems to be lacking in that department. Fortunately in Aikido, we didn't have to be hugged up under each other, but some guys would come in so funky you could almost see the fumes rise off of them like PigPen.

Clipped Finger/Toe Nails and a clean dogi are basic etiquette.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.
