Traveling in Japan this Summer - take good photos

Postby Steve Bildermann » Fri Jul 04, 2003 7:51 am

With the assistance of author and photographer Jeff Wignall, Fodor's has put together an invaluable guide to shooting great travel pictures: Nearly 100 easy-to-follow tips, with accompanying photos, covering every aspect of travel photography.

How to Take Travel Pictures Like a Pro

Because festivals, parades, and other ceremonies can infuse your travel photographs with a splash of color and excitement, they're worth making a special effort to take in. People tend to be less inhibited at such events, so your candid pictures of strangers will seem more friendly and intimate. As they usually celebrate something of historical, religious, or traditional significance, they can add depth to your travel album

This is a nice page, if on the basic side. The section on technique is particularly good. Photo.net also has good resources for travellers.

For anyone stateside for the 4th, here are some suggestions for taking pics of fireworks:

My additional tips- if your camera (in bulb mode on a tripod) doesn't do multiple exposures, just pop the lens cap on between bursts (no light= film doesn't get exposed) and you can combine flash in the foreground (light up your kid) with distant bursts of fireworks.
Have fun and happy 4th!
