G-man, the commentators seem to be simply pointing out, supported by threats from the pirates, that we've now "turned the corner" and entered the next phase. I don't think anyone's suggesting what you are. After all, the international response to the growing problem off Somalia was to send a collection of warships (including a Japanese one) - not negotiators with bull horns - and I don't recall anyone suggesting there was another way forward. So it was only a matter of time before it entered this phase. They're just commentating on the details.

It would be great if every pirate mothership was located and sunk, but as one of those articles points out, the sheer area makes this difficult, not to mention identification of the right boats. So it will likely require a long-term committment to protect shipping in the area by keeping warships there until (if ever) the situation in Somalia stabilises enough to control the land bases.

If you want to highlight Mr Obama's role, I guess it's like he and the French president have together kicked-off the second quarter of what is likely to become a more ugly match as time goes on.

But, I think that the commentators are trying to make a different match out of it. The Boston Globe led with a headline "Navy kills three pirates to save Captain". Other people are producing other fearful hints....

Defiant Somali pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons at another U.S. cargo ship on Tuesday but failed to hijack it, officials said, just days after Navy SEALs rescued an American hostage after an earlier unsuccessful hijacking.

The brazen midday attack on the MV Liberty Sun in international waters off the African coast is further evidence that Somali pirates are back to business as usual. Pirates have seized four other ships with 60 hostages since sharpshooters killed three gunmen holding American freighter captain Richard Phillips. "No one can deter us," one bandit boasted.

Is there any fucking reason that crews can't or don't carry some weaponry. I mean a .223 traveling at around 6,000 per, shooting in a downward direction will make some very permanent holes in a lot of things at a pretty nice distance. It would also put them at a better advantage than Cap'n Hook and friends on the lower gunwales regardless of what they're shooting upwards with....

It sounds like the Japanese Government crews these ships, doesn't it? "Having weapons overseas will violate Article #9 of the peace Constitution!"

I was wondering the same thing. I'm sure there must be some legal issues especially once they're in territorial waters or actually probably even more so once they enter a port and actually dock.

I would also guess that not every guy who works on a cargo ship likes the idea of having to get combat training.

That's because most shipping companies still don't want guns on board their vessels, for a variety of reasons. Crews aren't trained to use them, and they can be dangerous if a ship is carrying cargo that burns, like oil or gas. Also, many ports refuse entry to armed ships.
