West Shinjuku Sakuraya To Close

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Dec 15, 2008 10:37 pm

Electronics retailer Sakuraya plans to close its Shinjuku station west exit store at the end of this year. The company had been struggling when rival Best Denki took a 40% share back in 2006. In March of this year, Best Denki bought the remaining 60% to make the firm a fully-owned subsidiary and the closure is the first major restructuring move since they took complete control. The west exit store generates the highest sales of any of the Sakuraya outlets but weak spending and greater competition in the area has made it unprofitable. Until the end of the year, they are holding a closing down sale and all after-sales service will be handled by Sakuraya stores located on the east side of the station.

WOW - prime real estate up for grabs. Wonder who will take it over?

The west side has really become a mini-akiba over the last deacde so it really makes sense.

that's a shame...I liked that location a fair bit and it didn't seem as cluttered as some of their other locations...

And the answer is:

UNIQLO.

It will be the largest branch of the clothing retailer in Tokyo and is set to open on the 24th. The first 1,000 customers will get some 1,000 yen items for half price (maximum three per person) so they are hoping to get some initial buzz.

I think one of the reasons UNIQLO chose the site was to stop a competitor from having it. H&M in particular is looking for a foothold in Shinjuku and it's in Uniqlo's interests to keep them at bay.

It's also not a bad location because it's reasonably close to the weekday office workers but also close to the bus depot which is a very high turnover area. The regular shop hours will be 10:00am - 10:00pm which will service that crowd better than the branch in the Keio mall which opens later and closes earlier. It will be the sixth Uniqlo in Shinjuku but their only other major store is in san-chome on the other side of Isetan. That really is a separate shopping environment so there probbaly won't be much cannibalization although there is bound to be some.

Mind you, I agree with your general sentiment that a new Uniqlo is a pretty unexciting prospect.

There's a Uniqlo in Pepe (Seibu-Shinjuku Sen), which is about a 5 minute walk from the new Sakuraya Uniqlo. However, blocking H&M is a genius concept...

It's open. Not much of a queue by all accounts but perhaps that's not surprising given that Uniqlo is not a new retailer. It is the largest Uniqlo in Tokyo, apparently.

I'm with you there Take! I've been in and out of that store for years. Bit nostalgic to see it go....

The Best Denki in Takashimaya Times Square will also be closing. In other Shinjuku news, UK apparel retailer Top Shop has confirmed it will be a key tenant in a new development near the station's East Exit which will be open in the Autumn of next year. That puts Uniqlo's decision to take the Sakuraya site on the other side into some perspective.

Wow.. That's kind of a surprise, but I guess it shouldn't be..

*edit - I think the electronics stores need restructuring. It's obvious sites like Kakaku and Rakuten are taking over their business. They should reduce physical store size by 90%, leaving only 'consulting cubicles' and demo models. If you want to purchase, they assist in ordering online from their warehouse in bum-fuck-Saitama. It's delivered next day, or sometimes same day..

The only real advantage they have over online sites is experienced advice and physical fondling of the products; they should focus on the 'fondling experience'. :p
