These sorts of books are usually doomed to fail but I'll probably give it a look. Bernstein used to head the Beijing bureau for the New York Times and is married to Zhongmei Lei "the most celebrated classical dancer of her generation in China". They both live in the US now.

I think he was in Tokyo at one time. Might have just been passing through, but is definitely familiar.
