Dog meat in Okubo!

Postby Catoneinutica » Mon Apr 27, 2009 9:35 pm

Just got through adding my asinine 2 yen to a post by one of the MutantFrog kids on the violence inherent in eating live fish. I wrote, well at least the nipponesers don't eat dog, though some of them seem to enjoy a dolphin that's had the shit tastily kicked out of it. Then I go to check the wikipedia entry for "dog meat" and find that, by golly, dog meat is served in Japan:
Dog meat was consumed widely in Japan until 675 A.D. when Emperor Temmu decreed a prohibition on its consumption during the 4th-9th months of the year.[40] Today, it is exclusively consumed by Korean people in Japan. China is the only exporter of dog meat to Japan and exported 31 tons in 2006.[41] In Japan dog meat is available in Koreatowns such as the ones found in Tsuruhashi, Osaka and Okubo, Tokyo. Korean residents in Japan frequent dog meat restaurants there.[5]
Take, your input would be appreciated! Are these restaurants exempt from criticism because of the whole zainichi-taboo thing? Because Japanese seem to regard dog-eating as the depth of savagery, something only their less-evolved cousins on the Continent would do.

In any case, I'd like to take a look-see at one of these places next time I'm on the Shinjuku side of the Yamanote-sen.

Here's a blog entry about a visit to an Okubo restaurant:

Dog nabe:

Translation of the commentary:
Dog meat tastes different than beef or chicken. It was a little stinky, but delicious!

Here's a restaurant info site with a map, where they gave it 2 out of 5 stars: http://namcotravel.jp/user/restaurant/r6046630/

Yeah, I note that in my MF comments:

My comments appears toward the end (I use the same user name as here - lack of imagination, I guess).

good points. The way I see it is: if you can eat it, AND it's species won't suffer from the harvest.... eat that shit.

your link showed, once again, that adamu is a sheltered, inbred cat from the "middle". I bet he has no problem shoving a burger down his throat.

I tried the dog thing, it's not for me but I do understand why people like it. on the other hand, horse is quite good.

Kinda reminds me of this small bit in "They call me Bruce" (pointless but hilarious movie from way back when), (glad I found a copy online..) speed up to about minute 5, though the line is at 5:24

Wise guy in the middle: "Hey Bruce, this sauce is wonderful. What's your secret?"

Joon/Bruce: "Dog meat."
