But basically there is really not a thing you can do for this right? The gov't isn't going to start mass vaccinations, are they? Anybody planning on heading to NA for Golden Week? I wonder if your insurance company would cover you if you headed to Mexico even though there was a level 5 WHO warning posted.

It will take 6 months or so to develop a vaccine and grow it in significant quantities.

This probably gives us enough time as the current outbreak will likely drop off soon as weather warms up but could come back in the autumn when things cool down again.

The strain of flu which really scares the living shit out of me is 'the' flu. :p

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza#Epidemic_and_pandemic_spread
.. Typically, in a year's normal two flu seasons (one per hemisphere), there are between three and five million cases of severe illness and up to 500,000 deaths worldwide, which by some definitions is a yearly influenza epidemic..
When swine flu starts killing 1,300 people daily, like 'the' flu, I'm train jumping; joining the 3.3 Japanese people every hour who commit suicide.

This brings back fond Avian memories..

NHK just announced that a JAPANESE who arrived at Narita today is suspected of having this New strain of virus.
They also said that health officials are taking swabs from people sitting within 2 Meters of her seat on the plane and are going to monitor them!!!

How fucking crazy, anyone knows a single sneeze can travel 50 meters or more.

They also said that ALL the virus reisitant masks in Tokyo have been sold out.

Here we go.

I stocked up with enough fresh meat vegetables, rice, flour& most importantly beer for 3 months.

Once the panic starts you will have a hard time finding food. get some extra in now. And more importantly, if you are out amongst crowds looking for food, the virus will be looking for you.

Some kind of news flash on NHK right now about this virus and the Shinkansen being stopped in Tohoku?????

It's just sheeple panic and will pass.

If it returns in the autumn then there might be something to worry about. It should be possible to develop a vaccine by then though so I really don't think this is warrants anywhere near the attention that it is getting.

May well just be,
However when they anounced on Asahi TV the other night that once it starts here, the worst thing you can do is go out looking for food , the panic will start.

The trick is to get stocks in before it happens.

Hey, it is only food whic you are going to need anyway.

Northwest passenger arriving at Narita tests positive for influenza

A Japanese female passenger on a Northwest Airlines flight that arrived at Narita international airport from Los Angeles on Thursday has tested positive for influenza in a preliminary examination, airport officials said. The 25-year-old woman was transported from the airport by ambulance to Japanese Red Cross Narita Hospital. Accompanied by quarantine officers wearing protective suits, she walked into the hospital without assistance.

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry will announce the result of her examination at 7 a.m. Friday, it said. Around 20 other passengers who were seated near her will undergo follow-up checks on their health condition at accommodation near the airport, according to the officials. Japan has yet to see an outbreak of the new influenza that is spreading quickly around the world.

As they recycle the air on planes these days, they should check ALL of them!

Idiots.

They also just announced they could not get the medical questionnaire from 18,000 passengers.

This is insane.

The 1918 Spanish flu appears to be very like this one, the first wave the virus is reasonably weak, then it gets stronger.

If nothing else at least this has made for a change of headlines. Same panic, different title. ;)

Well. let's say the fact that they the authorities are making more out of this than they did when SARS was around, makes me wonder.

Viruses don't always mutate into more deadly strains.

We also know a lot more about the flu than we did in 1918, have far better medical services, have antiviral drugs, and have infinitely better communication systems. There is also good chance that we'll have a vaccine for this strain before colder weather returns.

TFG, you're starting to sound like Buraku.

I don't think that the authorities are making more out of this than they did with SARS. The WHO pandemic scale didn't exist when SARS happened and was implemented because of SARS. Mexico has been a lot more transparent about the whole thing than China, Indonesia, or Vietnam were during SARS so we're getting a lot more news.

SARS was a lot scarier because it was something that hadn't been seen before and that we didn't know how to make vaccines for. It also wasn't clear where it was coming from or how long it would last.

In 1918 it was also not possible to get on a plane and in 10 hours later be on a different continent, before symptoms surfaced.

Don't get me wrong, I am not in the least freaked out by this, I am simply taking wise precautions.

No, but in 1918 there was a bigass war winding down with literally millions of soldiers and civilians returning home and carrying the virus with them.

You're overreacting at the current time. If this comes back in the late autumn/early winter then there might be a bit more to worry about.

As for the SARS outbreak vs today
1) SARS started out in an authoritarian country that, to put it nicely, isn't the fastest at talking about potentially bad news
2) SARS was something new, so it took a while to ID it and figure it out, esp how it infected people.
3) Influenza's overall infection mechanisms and spread potential are well known as well as its lethality (to some populations) in even weak strains. This new variant seems to be much more lethal to more populations than other ones in recent memory is prompting great concern
4) SARS spooked alot governments at the time and since then they have implemented more plans and higher levels of vigilance for fast moving mass public health threats.
The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.
