http://www.japantoday.com/category/crime/view/prosecutors-decide-not-to-indict-smap-singer-kusanagi-over-indecencyTokyo prosecutors said Friday they have decided not to indict pop star Tsuyoshi Kusanagi over public indecency because he showed regret and has already incurred social sanctions. The 34-year-old member of popular music group SMAP was arrested naked and drunk in a central Tokyo park at around 3 a.m. on April 23 and was sent to the prosecutors and released the following day.
The incident has cost Kusanagi, who is also popular in South Korea and other Asian countries, lucrative endorsement contracts and TV appearances. He has also refrained from entertainment activities.
Referring to the reasons he escaped indictment, an investigative source said Kusanagi, who was arrested in the park next to the landmark Tokyo Midtown complex in the Roppongi-Akasaka area, regrets his act and has no criminal record.
Appearing in a packed press conference April 24 hours after his release from detention, Kusanagi apologized to his fans in Japan and other parts of Asia and said he does not know when he can resume his activities as a celebrity.
