BRILLIANT!!

Wow, they pulled a military style snooker on that village. Set them up like a racked pool balls.

Hidden cameras and what not? WOW!! They planned this and then made a documentary of it. Though I know the whole movie isn't just about Taiji, they are about to get ROYALLY embarrased.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

I think I will ask them to go back to my home area in Illinois and run an operation against the local commercial fishermen, who participate wantonly in the barbaric killing and subsequent butchering of literally thousands of catfish everyday. These poor catfish coming out of the Mississippi and Illinois River have radioactively high readings of every contaminant known to man and are not fit for human consumption among the thousands of people that eat them religiously.

Hopefully the entire population of the US will be insensed with what these hicks in john boats are doing to unsuspecting catfish...

The Cove

Postby samuraiwig » Thu May 07, 2009 9:38 pm

More on the movie here...The Cove

I went to Taiji once. A very innocuous place, if you didn't know what goes on there. But the locals did seem a bit jumpy at the sight of a foreigner with a camera. Hope this documentary embarasses some people into making some decisions.

Whale meat trade increases, despite ban

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Mon Jun 22, 2009 11:08 am

OSLO (AFP) – Despite being officially illegal, the international trade in whale meat between the whale-hunting nations is quietly picking up again, say enviromental campaigners.

The issue has already become one of the flashpoints between pro- and anti-whaling campaigners in the run-up to the five-day annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission, which opens Monday.

Delegates at the conference, which this year will be in the Portuguese island of Madeira, will also debate the issue.

Japan, Norway, Iceland -- the main whaling nations -- all want to lift the ban on the trade, which is outlawed under the terms of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

Despite the 1986 international moratorium on whale-hunting, Norway and Iceland have resumed whaling, having reserved their position on the moratorium. Japan uses an opt-out that allows whaling for scientific purposes.

After a gap of two decades, Japan started importing whale meat in 2008: a few tens of tonnes of Iceland whalemeat and less than 10 tonnes from Norway. (more)

Article is a little too sentimental with regards to Flipper, but

The Cove" is a powerful and effective piece of advocacy filmmaking, but it's difficult to watch it without thinking of subtitles like "The Place Where Evil Dwells" or "The Little Town With the Really Big Secret." Which is no accident.

"The Cove's" story of a quiet village in Japan that specializes in clandestine dolphin slaughter is quite consciously structured as a thriller by director Louie Psihoyos who won an audience award for it at Sundance.

Given the controversial nature of all this, Taiji's city government is hardly eager for a Western crew to get it all down on camera. Police shadow the filmmakers everywhere, and the local fishermen, who fear the loss of revenue, aggressively confront the visitors, hoping to provoke actions that will get the foreigners expelled from the country.

Undaunted, O'Barry and Psihoyos put together a kind of dream team of environmental activists with counter-insurgency skills. Cameras are secreted in realistic fake rocks created by George Lucas' ILM, and world-class free-divers place other cameras under water. The object, says the director, is "not just to capture the slaughter but to make people want to change."

I think I'll just slip into the loo and flog my dolphin, while I wait for the news report of them getting stuffed into a gut bucket at the end of their peaceful and relaxed converstion.

I agree with you Yoko, a bong of their stash could probably keep the east coast of China up for a week....

I knew I had to act fast, there was no way the story was not going to get posted. Maybe if the "celebrity" cared to know anything about Japan instead of showing up and trying to make them see the error in their ways she should wait a few months till after "The Cove" gets released in Japan, then she could even have a bunch of Japanese people on her side, but seriously this is a Japanese thing, let Japanese people deal with it.
