Police arrested on Thursday a 36-year-old monk from Shogoin Monzeki, a renowned Buddhist temple in Kyoto, on suspicion of using stimulant drugs in March, police officials said. Kenichi Yoshida was held after he apparently assaulted a woman on March 7 while asking passers-by for alms on a street near JR Osaka Station, leading her brother to find him a week later and take him to a police station. Officers at the police station found traces of injections on his arm and a urine test detected suspected amphetamine use. Shogoin Monzeki, established in 1090, was once known as the main temple of a sect of "yamabushi" strolling ascetics.
