Dave Brubeck's Jazz Impressions of Japan

The Dave Brubeck Quartet performs "The Koto Song" from the 1964 album "Jazz Impressions of Japan". You can hear samples of the other tracks via that Amazon link and someone has also uploaded the full audio clip of "Fujiyama" to YouTube.

Thanks for the link Mulboyne. Very interesting, and I had no idea Brubeck had such an album. Though if Japan were as bland and boring as that recording (or that quartet in general) I would have hydrogen sulphided myself years ago.. :-)

Unfortunately no media links, but for those into 1964 issued Japan-themed jazz albums, the excellent Kyoto by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers puts those Brubeck guys in their place.

Omae mona, the blasphemy of it all. Brubek and company may have been light in some of their music, but he and Stan Getz were never bland and boring. May Zeus conduct your next Colonoscopy with one of his lightning bolts for being sacrilegious!

I'll give it to you on Getz - he is light but not necessarily bland or boring. But I am going to keep blaspheming on Brubeck even if it means I burn in hell. As long as they aren't playing Brubeck on the stereo down there :-)

I've got a 1971 Keith Jarrett compilation which has a piano solo called "Nagoya Part 2" on it. When I then visited Japan and had cause to go to the city, I couldn't imagine what had inspired him to name a composition after the place. It was only some years later that I found out it had that name simply because the piece was part of an encore he performed during a concert there.
