(greetings from mid-summer kenya, btw)

Which piece?

BTW I had a trip into Dubai coming up, but now it may not transpire as one of the parties to the deal doesn't appear to be in the stimulus package, or something, so I don't know if we can get together until the KIX guys spring you on your way back....

Only 12 years in the big house.
TOKYO, May 18 (Itar-Tass) - Court of Saitama District in Japan has issued a sentence to the Pakistani citizen Mohammad Alam who killed a 23-year-old Russian woman earlier this year.
Alam has been sentenced to twelve years in jail.
The murder of Anastasia Korpachova occurred February 6 and the police detained Alam a mere three days later.
He confessed committing of the crime almost immediately.
The judges qualified it as an unwilled action that had been committed out of personal motives, as Alam had been dating Korpachova previously.

I wouldn't know how to go about deciding how long punishments should be, but twelve years seems too short for taking someone's life. In the US, 12 years would often mean less because of parole or time off for good behavior. I'm guessing that in Japan, he could also likely get out in a lot less than 12 years.

so killing someone you were sleeping with automatically makes it less heinous than if you kill a random stranger???

It sounds like the judge is looking at it as a crime of passion which is pretty ridiculous considering the guy had been stalking her and staking out her apartment. Let's also not forget that he was "dating" someone else's wife. I wonder how understanding the judge would have been had the victim been a Japanese woman. I'd even be willing to bet that had she been Western European the sentence would have been harsher. Every old fart in Japan thinks Russian women are whores (not that it'd make it OK of she was).

I usually think of a crime of passion as being something like you come home early from a business trip and find your wife and best friend in bed and you lose it and beat the guy to death. Certainly wrong and something that should be punished but not the same thing as plotting your revenge which involves kidnapping the guy, cutting him up, and burying him in the woods a week later.

Anyway, imagine what would have happened to this guy back home in Pakistan if he had fucked and killed some other guy's wife.

I wouldn't be surprised if this 'logic' was often applied around the world....Killing a person you know is bad from a general society point of view, in that any killing is bad, but less so from imminent threat to everyone in the community point of view. Stranger killings usually freak out communities much more than murderous domestic disputes and likely result in much harsher sentences, often more for the 'removal of threat to society' benefit vs. some form of extra punishment. That's not to say that killing a spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend is less bad, but that society is less impacted by it as whole than someone just randomly killing someone on the subway.

Maybe I'm missing something but I haven't seen anything that clearly states that she was dating the killer after her marriage took place. Her husband accompanied her to the koban, which most guys wouldn't do if wifey was playing around. Isn't it possible that she was dating him before she got married? (Leaving that bit out would make for less scandal-ridden story for the obasans to cluck at, though... n-e-e ...)
