North Korea says it conducted nuclear test

North Korea says it conducted nuclear test
AP via MSNBC, May 24, 2009
North Korea announced Monday that it successfully carried out an underground nuclear test, weeks after threatening to restart its rogue atomic program.

[...]

Seismologists from the U.S., South Korea and Japan reported earthquakes in an northeastern area, where North Korea conducted a nuclear test in 2006.

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake was registered in northeastern North Korea at 9:54 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake, measured at a depth of 6 miles underground, occurred 40 miles northwest of the city of Kimchaek, the USGS said.

We'll see about that. Nkimchees' claim of last month's satellite launch turned out to be false after all.

The quakes are generally a pretty good indicator. Later there should be trace amounts of fallout that I guess we'll here more about.

News fodder for the boobtoob anyway.

Reportedly they conducted a short range missle test immediately after detonating the nuke. May we all live in interesting times :D

Let's see how the rest of the world reacts to this. After seeing how they handled the aftermath of the missile launch, I would say absolute dick.

Japan says N.Korea nuclear test "unacceptable"
TOKYO, May 25 (Reuters) - North Korea's nuclear test would be a clear violation of the U.N. Security Council resolution and an unacceptable move, Japan's top government spokesman said on Monday after Pyongyang said it had tested a nuclear device.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura told reporters that Japan was asking for an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting and would seek a new resolution by the council.

Kyodo news agency said Japan was also considering tightening its own sanctions on the reclusive communist state. (Reporting by Yoko Kubota)

Oooh.. now they are getting serious and fired up. Wasn't the last request for the UN resolution for the missile launch denied or still on pending status?

Yeah, they'll probably reduce the size of cash transfers from Japan to North Korea that doesn't require J gov approval down by 2%....That will show them North Koreans who's boss.

If the j-gov't had any balls at all they'd outlaw pachinko. Like that will ever happen! (Gambling is illegal in Japan...)

I don't know the exact figures but part of the revenue generated by pachinko, mostly owned by zainichis, end up funding North Korea's dictatorship. I have no problem with pachinkos fading away from public existence.

Remittances from zainichi Norks in Japan, comprised mostly of pachinko earnings, have probably financed the better part of Kim's freakish little dynasty for decades. So the whole those-Nork-bastards-kidnapped-sweet-young-flowers-of-Nihon-like-Yokota-Megumi just reeks of cognitive dissonance. Japan has a "fifth column" in Japan that, with J-gov't blessing, is sending money, and J-people themselves, to NK.

Abductions of Japanese? You provided a good part of the financing, Japan. Well done! NK missiles, possibly equipped with nukes, flying over Japan, and perhaps later landing on Japan? Ditto.

Japan is a seriously autistic country. Utterly disfunctional in foreign relations

Most Japanese like you (if indeed that's what you are) must, if only passively, support Gen. Kim. Otherwise, you would've voted for a government that would've clamped down on zainichi-kita-chosenjin remittances to NK. Instead, like drooling buffoons, you vote, election after election, for Jiminto, with all its yakuza/zainichi ties.

Actually, the dealings with the NK/Zainichis politically were for a long time exclusively held property held by the now defunct Japan Socialist Party. The only real LDP interloper was Kanemaru Shin. He was on the sacred inner circle because of his LDP kingmaker role when dealing with the JSP in the polical backrooms.

We can laugh at the fat bastard all we want, but he is still a dangerously crazy man who is probably not far from death, has "special" sons and his country is slowing starving itself to death. He's detinated two nuclear bombs, fired off a few long range missiles and several short range ones, all within the last decade. This fat fucker is becoming more and more unpredictable. The only thing that the US/Japan/S. Korea can do is cease all aid but of course that won't happen and if it did, then Kim would probably do what his daddy did 60 years ago, head south. It's unlikely, but the possibility is scary as hell.

Yeah the abduction thing is tragic, but have you seen the North Korean women? I think any one of us would have outsourced to Japan :drool5:

My post was originally a bit longer and went on how we can't do jack shit as Lil' Kim has tens upon thousands pieces of artillery aimed at Seoul, but I agree with the fact this this is a fucked up deal. Unless we can convince SK to move their capital to Pusan or perhaps Cheju and are prepared to strike first, I don't really see how we could stand any chance of not losing. And unless of course some miracle happens, millions would be killed.

So, we're probably going to send them some more fuel oil and money to shut them up for a couple of months, or at least until they run out of weapons grade plutonium.

Um... yeah about that: Dutch news (translated) is now reporting the Yongbyon reactor has been restarted, and CNN is reporting NK feels it is no longer bound by the 1953 truce.

Krazy Kommie Kim has nukes but he has no ready way to deliver them.

If NK manages to get reliable nukes small enough to put into a missile then there is something to worry about. Thankfully it is seemingly a lot harder to build small nukes than to build something like the bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Size matters. ;)

Or use one of those medieval catapult things.
That'd do it!
:ninja3:

I realize it's not funny, but what are ya gonna do?
On the other hand, under all the bravado I suspect Kim is actually a sniveling scaredy-cat, and wouldn't want any nukes going off anywhere in his vicinity. The NK military ... now that's a different story,

Not much -- Seoul is about 50km from the border. There'd be fallout if the winds were right (wrong?) but 20kt 50km away isn't going to do much to the city itself.

-----
[Addition:]
If NK manages a 50mt "Tsar Bomba" sorta weapon then they could wipe Seoul from the border. ]http://www.carloslabs.com/projects/200712B/GroundZero.html[/url]
(The mapplet is rather basic of course as it doesn't take into consideration geography etc.)

21kt from the NK border:

Krazy Kim selling the technology (or the actual bombs) is a bigger potential problem than what he can do with a 20kt bomb himself.

No offense to any S. Koreans on this forum but they don't have a fraction the capability Isreal does. Also China and Russia love the fact that they have a commie buffer zone and would not much appreciate N. Korea getting attacked (look at the Korean war). The only thing we can do military wise is wait, policy wise keep getting fucked in the ass. Moving the capital would be the best option, as already mentioned, problem is Seoul is fucking huge and there are still many S. Koreans who think Kim-bob is harmless.

I personally don't think the N. Koreans will make it past the first McDonalds they run into, they are a starving nation after all

Why is North Korea going ape-shit all of a sudden, nuclear tests, missile tests, war threats, and all the while, America is sitting back waiting for Korea to do something really stupid so they can get the bomber wing based in Okinawa some action but can only wait on China or Russia to spank their bastard child.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.
