[floatl]Image[/floatl]Yomiuri: Models of Tsukiji market's Turret trucks to go on sale
A plastic model maker better known for its models of dekotora, or garishly decorated trucks, has based its latest product on a vehicle not quite so ostentatious. Aoshima Bunka Kyozai will soon put on sale 1:32-scale models of the three-wheeled trucks used by workers at Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market to wheel the catch of the day around the cramped lanes of the bustling market. The Shizuoka-based firm will put two models of the Turret truck, which are more commonly known as the Tare, on sale in late June as the first offering in its "Tokushu Niyaku Series" (Special Stevedore Series). The 10-centimeter-long models replicate features such as the Tare's cylindrical driver's platform and steering wheel, and its styrofoam box for carrying fish. They also include the operator sporting an apron and rubber boots. Once the model is completed and decorated, one can picture the spectacle of a cheerful market worker calling out as he speeds around the market on his Tare. The Turret trucks is the registered trademark of Asaka Seisaku-sho, but it is often abbreviated to Tare and used for other makers' products, with market workers affectionately dubbing it a "bata bata" or "pata pata"...The Tare first appeared at the market soon after the end of World War II, and about 2,200 are currently registered...A set of two vehicles will cost 2,940 yen. They will go on sale at major model stores and other shops throughout the country...more...
